A Spanish historian says the man we know as Christopher Columbus was really named "Pedro Scotto," Isn't Pedro the Spanish name for Peter? Peter the Scotsman?
A holiday web page about Columbus Day tells the traditional history we all know and love. Or hate as the case may be. The 1492 history that I get totally confused. Was the explorer in question Italian and sent to the east by going west an Italian sent by the Spanish or vice verse?
The names we all grew up with...
- Spanish - Cristóbal Colón
- Portuguese - Christovão Colom
- Italian - Cristoforo Colombo
All translated to the English Christopher Columbus that we all know and love. Or don't love.
Columbus Ohio is the biggest city named after the explorer.
The explorer in question... his ancestry was from Scotland according to Spanish Historian, Alfonso Ensenat de Villalonga in "Christopher Columbus was actually a Scotsman called Pedro Scotto, historian says" on Telegraph.co.uk :
"He had light-coloured eyes and freckles. He also had blond hair even though it quickly turned white. That's how his contemporaries described him. Nothing like the traditional images (of him), which are totally invented," the historian said."
Revisionist history - Columbus coulda been Scotto on the Scioto River.
I see a lot of European publications picking up the story... when will it be in the Columbus Dispatch? Or is this such heresy that it should not be spoken of? Too early for an April Fools joke...
I am not so sure the Italians are going to give Christopher Columbus up without a fight. Columbus Ohio celebrates Columbus and Italian heritage in October:
Columbus Italian Festival 2008
Columbus Day... I love a parade

Let me know if you are going to write a Green Post and this time I mean, Irish of course given the month.
Very close to my heart...I'm one half Irish from Dear Dad's side and thought you might be too. Am I right? Any celebration on St Pat's day in Columbus...no, I'm sure there aren't any :-)
3/4 Irish if my math is correct... mother 100%, father 1/2. 3 out of 4 grandparents were 100%. McCabe is my father's last name but sounds more Irish than my mother's maiden name and waaaay more Irish than my married name was.
I have posted about the Columbus St. Patrick's day events and the Dublin Ohio St. Patrick's Day plans and a little Irish watering hole in Worthington earlier this week or last week but stay tuned if I get to go to a parade or two I could post more.
