To the buyers out there......
Realtors cannot tell you "how the neighborhood is" or "how good are the schools" in particular areas. That is against the Fair Housing Laws. We can offer you websites to research these things. We can tell you to search on the internet. We can suggest you knock on doors in the neighborhood to talk to the neighbors. But we cannot give our opinions on how "safe" the area is. We encourage you to research the area before you buy. It's important to buy in a neighborhood you feel comfortable in.
It's not that we don't know the area. It's not that we are holding back. It's just that we can't help you there or we are violating the law.

Interesting. Where in the law does it say that a buyer's agent cannot provide published information about public schools when asked by a home buyer?
I don't think Diane said real estate agents can't share info with buyers, I took it to mean, don't ask me for MY opinion of what schools are good for YOUR kids. Thanks for the comment.
Maureen - Sometimes we (agents) get asked some tricky questions by buyers and it's hard to remember NOT to share our personal opinions. I do provide clients with a printout of resources to make their 'fact finding' mission a little easier, but I shy away from 'opinions' that could be misinterpreted. Besides - my idea of a safe neighborhood could vary widely from a client's viewpoint - and vice versa.
