Free Speech - Ohio

OhioTeri started it.

Teri Lussier  in Huber Heights started it on her site  just because it made her laugh.  I thought the hullabaloo was over Dayton area strip-clubs because the fella with the funny line about givng bagels to a Columbus food pantry is a Dayton area strip-club owner. I wrote Mid Ohio FoodBank scores bagels

Nooooooo it's over proposed state law, Senate Bill 16, now in the state house of representatives. It passed in the senate 24 to 8, I believe.  Some say Senate Bill 16 is not constitutional.

Fighting the law proposed by the conservative Cincinnati based 'Citizens for Community Values' is now the cause of the  nonprofit civil-liberties group 'Progress Ohio', taking the side of the dancers.

Mary McCarty staff writer for the Dayton Daily News wrote of the group 'Dancers for Democracy':

"Set aside your feelings about strip clubs and ask yourselves: How is this not a violation of free speech? Not to mention a colossal waste of our legislators' time in a state that has so many other pressing issues."

"That puts me in the uncomfortable position of siding with the strip-club owners. But let's look at it another way: I'm taking the side of the First Amendment."

It's all I could do not to title this post something about Ohio being the butt of jokes but  "Strippers from across Ohio want to get something off their chests." was the first line one out of state TV stations internet site used. The Virginia site had it under "Strange News"

Zoning laws are often used to fight strip-clubs on a local level fixing where adult businesses may be located within the community, away from residential areas. I can't even remember the name of the strip-club that opened in Worthington on E. Wilson Bridge Rd. a block from my office.  It's been gone for over five years now I believe. What a hullabaloo when it opened.

I also wrote She's a Brick House about the issue...kinda except, it's really about brick houses.

Comical.  They can't touch and can only look from 6 feet away???

No doubt this legislation could all be traced by following the money.  Who made what contribution to what politician to draft and promulgate the lesgislation.

Of course money is considered by many to be speech.

Who knows????

I would think the group backing the dancers would have more money behind them than the conservative group out of Cincinnati.  What do I know? Thanks for the comment.

Maureen- I used to have a client who owned a strip bar.. to say the least he had a rather different view of the world.. as to those behind the bill.. It alwasy seems  that six months or a year later you find out these guys are some of the clubs best patrons..

I don't think the man who is the force behind the 'Citizens for Community Values' would ever / could ever patronize any adult entertainment.    I had no idea about any of this until Teri shared the bagel story on her blog.  I might have stayed awake to watch the news Tuesday and seen the Dancers for Democracy but it meant so much more having read what it was about, who was involved.
