Ohio Fall Color Updates

Oak TreeDid you know we have over 100 trees in Ohio... 100 varieties... or species.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Fall Color Report

The first color report of 2008 is up.  We in Central Ohio are predicted to be peak color in mid October.  It says of most of the nearby State Parks "changing."  I just noticed that it was not "green" walking and driving around Central Ohio within the last couple of days.  There are tinges of color.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources website says now:

"Poison ivy, Virginia creeper and buckeye trees are showing the most color this week, said Casey Munchel, Fall Color expert with ODNR. The poison ivy and Virginia creeper vines are coming on strong with reds and the buckeye trees are turning yellow"

We went for a short walk in the woods at Sharon Woods Metro Park on September 14, 2008.  It was windy but not as bad as it would get a couple of hours later (the remnants of Hurricane Ike came through Central Ohio that day.)  When nuts would fall out of the trees (and they were, lots) and hit you they would hurt like a #@!*.  As we were retreating from the woods I saw some red vines on a tree...  did not stop to take a photo.  I am pretty sure it was poison ivy.

The photo is an oak tree in Highbanks Metro Park in 2007.  The slideshow is Highbanks Metro Park in 2007, probably a week or so after Central Ohio color was considered peak.  The mighty oak was still very green.

I hope to get some pretty fall pictures in 2008.

Maureen:  Great post!  Makes me want to see sweater weather again (not for another month or two here in Central Texas, though).  Congrats on getting nominated for the top 100 women in real estate today!

Steve we're in the 70's and 80's in the day, cooler at night.  It's the kind of weather where you take a sweater or jacket in the morning and lose it somewhere during the day because you don't need it and then next morning when it is in the 50's you think "Darn my sweater is at...."

I just commented back thinking you were Steve Shatsky... in Dallas Texas... who used to live in Central Ohio.  You are in Housto?  Both KW, both TX....
