Outside Columbus...does the media in your market blog? TV stations? Radio stations? The newspapers?
Does the media in your market Twitter? Twitter is microblogging.
The media in Columbus is Twittering... just like us civilians. I am @MoinColumbusOH on Twitter.
Tim Eby is the first old media soul that I met via Twitter. Tim is with WOSU radio in Columbus. Tim inspired a post on ActiveRain about Twitter. Can you Twitter if you are paranoid? Having a stranger "following me" freaked me out. I knew strangers were reading my blogs... why did having a follower on Twitter who I did NOT know freak me out? I am paranoid. Tim is @timjeby on Twitter.
I started following oldmediajim at some point.. on Twitter @oldmediajim (love that name) is NOT local... oldmediajim runs around the world as a ??? I think oldmediajim is with ABC news.... I stand corrected - see comments... NBC... (national news) oldmediajim is Jim Long in real life according to Twitter. His Twitter bio which tickles me is "new media soul trapped in an old media body"
I had never given "old media" or "new media" a lot of thought prior to following some of the "old media" on Twitter. Yes I have read news feeds from local news for years on the internet, when something catches my eye.
I heard on TV that Channel 4 (local NBC) was going to start Twittering so I went looking and started following some of the Channel 4 news staff including but not limited to:
Ryan @NBCSquire
Denise @Denise_WCMH
Donna @donna_nbc4i
Jason @Jason_WCMH
Amanda @Amanda_WCMH
A lot of the staff at Channel 4 Twitters, these are just a few that I follow. Here's a post on Ryan Squire's (@NBCSquire on Twitter) blog about who is Twittering at their TV station new and their Twitter handles..including the STARS on NBC 4 news in Columbus.
I just started following an intern at Channel 4 this morning.. @InternMeredith
I assumed that Channel 4 would use Twitter to feed their news stories but that is not how Channel 4 uses Twitter.
On his blog Ryan Squire in "Does Twitter Give the Competition An Advantage?" raisesd a question about the way they (NBC 4 in Columbus Ohio) are using Twitter.
I believe I heard via Twitter that Channel 10 was now Twiittering so I started following Channel 10 (our local CBS station.) A week or so ago some of us were Twittering about the difference in the two local channels...
Channel 10 Twitters different than Channel 4. Channel 10 has a SpokesTwitter for the TV News. Channel 10 does not rely totally on TwitterFeed to post their Tweets, but I believe it is all one person Tweeting. I wrote about how the two Columbus TV stations are using Twitter differently on ColumbusBestBlog:
Watching Columbus TV News Twitter the comments on my post is where I found out who the SpokesTwitterer for Channel 10 is. Craig Friedman is the voice of Channel 10 on Twitter.
Channel 10 is @TV10 on Twitter.
Does the old media in your market use new media?
I saw my friend Stephen in Birmingham Alabama tweeting at what looks like a local ABC station
Does the newspaper Twitter in your market? I have not seen the Columbus Dispatch embrace Twittering yet. Do local radio stations Twitter? Other than WOSU I am not sure that local radio has discovered Twitter yet. Does the TV news Twitter in your market? Do they take the approach of letting individuals within their organization have a voice on Twitter? Or having an individual post for the "company."

I just had to comment because Columbus, OH is my home town, though I have lived in the Indianapolis area for 20 years now. Miss my hometown and enjoyed seeing the Columbus skyline on you header.
Just when I think I am doing great to finally be a participant on AR and have an outside blog, there are more things to see, do and participate in. I find it quite a challenge to run a successful RE team, blog, blog some more and still have time left over for family. It would be great if some knowledgeable person could prioritize where our time is best spent----seems that AR would come in number 1?
Pat Twittering is not a big commitment of time or energy. 140 characters. It's totally simple. It takes a lot of getting used to though.
And it can be frustrating because Twitter has some infrastructure problems.
For me my own blog should be number one but I think it is not... sadly because it is not as easy as AR.
Nice to meet you.
I think that within 20 years almost all newspapers will be dead. A problem they have is the advertisers cancel because subscribers are down. Lacking revenue, they raise ad rates and more people cancel. Plus, with most newspapers people can go online and read the same content others are paying for, but online it is usually free. They are going to fail. It is happening fast right now.
Steven do you think the TV news and other old media is going to go through the same thing? Our local newspaper is online... but for awhile they tried to charge for it. Or charge for some of it.
Maureen, this is another story how Columbus is way ahead of the nation in social communication. Thanks for highlighting this.
Glad you mentioned that Gary... Tuesday night is the Social Media Cafe in Columbus, for anyone in Central Ohio. I think people like Tim Eby are part of the reason that social media is ahead in Columbus and that the old media is trying to embrace new media... Thanks Gary.
"nice post thanks for sharing"
Fox News did a story on Twitter last Monday morning, @mikemcdonald. They interveiwed a congressman using it to get his messages out. I subscribe to all the new services in Ann Arbor and find out how my drive home will be. tee hee. Are you around, can I call you?
Hey wise guy from Ann Arbor!
I read some stuff about Congress trying to limit Twittering and how some people in Congress are using Twitter... never really thought about that before, although I noticed @agentSteph talking to someone from her area... I have not even thought about following people like that....
am I around? yeeeessssssssssssssss
can you call? You may.
Today I found that the Today Show Twtters? I never knew that. Totally unlocal but I started following them. I used to watch that every morning. I just noticed this via Twitter Search (formerly Summize) and have to agree with this person who I don't follow about Channel 4's use of Twitter
Maureen, that was a local affiliate. He had just announced the weather report, so of course, I questioned his power. He never responded. We have three local affiliates and zero actual anchors twittering here (that I know of) They are @abc3340 @nbc13 and @cbs42 The last one is the only I have seen engage in conversation thus far... oh well, at least they are there. The local FOX affiliate hasn't shown up yet.
I thought it was a meteorologist or weather person Stephen and you were driving in pouring rain and tweeting? It will be fun for you to watch whether they start conversing or just transmit as if they are broadcasting.
I stand corrected (or do I?) people at Channel 10 Twitter... from @10TV on Twitter:
10TV @MoInColumbusOH Maureen, a few corrections from your blog: We're @10TV on Twitter. Also @kurtludlow10TV and @Andy_10TV are on Twitter. about 1 hour ago from web in reply to MoInColumbusOH
Maureen - Thanks for the kudos and for your continued work in venturing into new places in Social Media. The engagement and conversation that comes from these tools I believe is becoming more and more critical in connecting with people (both virtually and face to face). Speaking of which, hope you'll be able to make the Columbus TweetUp on Wednesday.
Actually, the national camera person you follow (and mentioned in your post) is @newmediajim and he works for NBC in the Washington, D.C. bureau.
I follow the media from here in Baltimore, Md. and can say Columbus sure seems well ahead of other cities when it comes to media on Twitter.
@contactjeff
Tim I doubt I can make it to the TweetUp. Thanks for the comment. Thanks for a link you direct mailed me on Twitter long, long ago... I did not notice it for weeks... About Sauce... social media? I go back and reread the site every couple of months and understand more of it. I think about sharing it with all my buds on ActiveRain sometimes... and then say ... nah...
Thanks for the correction @contactjeff I will correct that in the entry.
NBC too? I'm seeing a trend...wonder where I got ABC from.
I confuse the networks obviously.
Just yesterday I started following @NBCNewsCrew.com http://twitter.com/NBCNewsCrew Someone at NBC4i must have tweeted something to him /her. I thought NBC as in the local channel 4... but then realized it was network.... Whomever@NBCNewsCrew.comt is really does a great job interacting.
