Thanks Charlie. I thought the Google thing with the rats was adorable. I hate rats. I am always interested to see what Google does for each holiday. You know there's an archive with all of them on Google and they warn you not to "borrow" them... people do "borrow" the holiday logos because some of them are so much fun...but Google protects their TM and content.

If they just tell you 1972 was the year of the Rat they are not taking YOU into consideration if you were born in January 1972 before the 16th.

I did a post a few weeks back about Feng Shui and Chinese New Year on one of my blogs to try to see if I heard from any local Feng Shui people... not a peep. Oh well...
I don't know Pam... which end would be rat and which would be pig... I guess I like both ends of a pig better... cute little snout, curly tail. I think of cartoonish pigs... all pink and pretty... or like Babe. Rat's I have a harder time with. I have blog entries going back two years about Chinese New Year... pig images... dog images in 4704... I did not even look for rat images... the rat in Ratatouille was cute.... the rats on Google today are cute... but I am not partial to rats. I'd go for Pig if it was me...

LY was a good year for rabbits? Or Hares (bigger? longer ears?) Last year (4705) was the year of the pig wasn't it? Good year for rabbits? 2011 will be the year of the Hare I believe. I have a blog that says Rabbit, Rabbit , Rabbit the first of every month for good luck (not that I believe this stuff mind you...) and I wish next year was the year of the Hare. My bad for some reason I thought last year was the rabbit but you are right it was the pig and 2011 will be the year of the hare.

rats... mice, moles, voles.... squirrels if they get too close... you just see rodents more than snakes... I saw a rat in a residential area in Metro Detroit last summer and I just have to think about it to gross myself out... I know they are everywhere (local) but I don't see them.
I had a great teacher in high school for Russian History who talked about rats. It was related to Russian History because of the bubonic plague which was passed on by fleas (?) on rats?... or by the rats themselves? something like that. My sister had taken the class before me and talked about Mr. Kazmarek and the rats... it was a great story.
Linda you have an auspicious year to look forward to! And a great sign unlike some... that come with negative connotations at least here. Rabbits are cute. Actually I am scared of rabbit. Are they rodents? I got bit by a rabbit as a kid but I saw a neighbor bit worse, sticking his fingers in the rabbit cage. Other kids were sticking carrots in. Lots of blood and screaming... I am scarred for life... terrified by rabbits.
The snake is one of the zodiac, but I am not sure when the next one is coming up. The Year of the Snake is in between the Dragon and the Horse.

I am a Monkey. My son came home from school today (4th grade) with the whole chart and was eager to find out what each person in our family was. I thought it was really cool that they expose the kids to other cultures like this. And I fit the description of the monkey almost perfectly!

Hi Maureen - I really hated to move my blog off of the main site, www.jalone.com, but having a blog on a true blog platform really has it's advantages (I now just need to spend time understanding the full capabilites of wordpress!) and it makes posting so much easier. I was born in 1960, so yeah, I am a rat - my wife thinks I am of the cuter type of rat: one who takes out the garbage instead of rooting through it.
I really miss Columbus - I went to Whetstone high school there and my first "real" job was selling Cokes to students in the student seating block at OSU during the games.
