Columbus bed bugs.... not just City of Columbus of course... Did you know there is a Central Ohio Bed Bugs Task Force.... and their site includes a page titled "realtor recommendations" ?
Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force (CentralOhioBedBugs.org is the url) The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force's "realtor recommendations" are a .pdf (Acrobat Reader document.)
The Central Ohio Bed Bug Taks Force recommendations to "REALTORS®" (site reads "realtors") says:
"the responsibility of discovering bed bug infestations is in your court"
Really?
Who is the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force?
The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force According to their site the Steering Committee of the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force includes people from the Franklin County Board of Health, The Ohio State University, Columbus Code Enforcement, the Ohio Pest Management Association and the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
*The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force site says to REALTORS® * ...although the site says realtors I'd think they include licensed real estate
agents in Ohio who do not belong to the National Association of REALTORS. The term REALTORS® just means member of a trade organization, the National Association of REALTORS.
The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force has a colorful map but I do not see the legend to know what the colors mean... The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force says:
"Selling residences and commercial buildings is an already complicated process, as you well know. Until recently, the only insect issues that realtors had to be concerned about were wood-destroying insects, such as termites and carpenter ants. Now, add to that the risk of a building being infested with bed bugs and the process can become a nightmare. This page is offered as a list of practical tips and resources to assist realtor in maintaining their success with selling developed properties, despite the threat of bed bugs."
I disagree... real estate agents have always had to be aware of any infestation that affects the sale of a home, insect issues include wasps, hornets, fleas... but the Central Ohio bed bug task force is totally focused on bed bugs. Bed bugs are a problem in Central Ohio. I have not run into bed bugs personally or professionally.
Although I have never had any experience with bed bugs, I would not wish bed bugs on my worst enemy. This is the first in a four part series about Central Ohio bed bugs.
Come back to read about:
- The Columbus Board of REALTORS® PURCHASE CONTRACT bed bug contingency*....
- Central Ohio home sellers do the bed bugs convey?
- Central Ohio WHO inspects for bed bugs
I am itchy and I just took a shower...
* Here is a hint that RUINS the whole next post in the series... there is no contingency for this pest or any other pest, in the CBR contract. EDITED to add "PURCHASE CONTRACT."

I thought bed bugs only live in beds? If beds are not included with the sale of the house, why is this a concern to real estate agents?
That is what I think too Amanda... I believe bed bugs live in beds and upholstered furniture.
I think in referring to "REALTORS" the Central Ohio Task Force may be talking to property managers too, although they refer to the sale of homes, rather than renting homes. I am not sure whether most property managers in our area are members of CBR, OAR and NAR, thus Realtors.... but they say it is the responsibility of "realtors" in the sale of residential and commercial (?) properties.
Good reason to be sure ALL personal property is removed from a home by the seller, especially couches, upholstered chairs and beds.
Wow!!! I have seen several posts here lately on bed bugs. And here I thought they were a thing of the past...
(Cimex lectularius) is back in business, has been for a couple of years. NYC is popular. Columbus is popular.
They do live in beds and furniture, however sometimes they get into the carpet, clothing, etc. and that is how they get left behind and/or move to a new location. Haven't you seen the horror stories about people that stay in hotels and bring them home with them in their luggage, ewwww!
of course I have, stay tuned to the whole series or click on a link.
Should I forward everything I write to you for editing, to make sure I have included everything YOU need to read in the post?
or perhaps Colette is criticizing me and Amanda for our conversation in comments number one and two here, in particlular. The link tells you everything you want to know about bed bugs in Central Ohio.... according to the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force.
I read it...
Wow, No criticizing. I was just making a simple statement!! Don't have to get such a pissy attitute over it.
pissy attitude?
I'd say Thanks for stopping by to set me straight again... but then you might think you are welcome. Personally I find it better to not make comments on other local re agents posts. Especially when they are talking to consumers. If I was debating bedbugs with other's in the real estate industry, in a spirited discussion, it would be another matter.
I wrote a post for consumers...
If it's a public post, it's open to ALL for discussion, not just who you want to comment on your post, sorry for stepping on your toes.
Maybe you should put a disclaimer on your posts that they are for consumers only and any local RE agent that comments will get scolded for not following YOUR rules.
I used to do that... or close comments.
I would think I should be able to open comments at some point though.
