James Kilbourne welcomes HER to Old Worthington

James Kilbourne

"James Kilbourne" the founder of Worthington attended  'Business After Hours' with the Worthington Chamber of Commerce and others on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 to celebrate a new use of his old place.  The Kilbourne Commercial Building or at least the north end of the building is coming back to life as a real estate office.  Real Living HER Worthington (formerly known as HER Realtors) is opening  at 681 High St. after years at two other sites in the city of Worthington, most recently 6902 N. High St.  Worthington.Worthington Hotel plaque on the Kilbourne Commercial Bldg

The new home for the real estate office is in building that has been a home, a tavern (same thing as a hotel?), a surveyors office, a newspaper, a funeral home and of course various shops over the years, most recently the Curio Cabinet and Christmas Village.  One of the plaques on the exterior of the historic building refers to the building as a hotel and has a quote from James Kilbourne.

The other plaque on the historic building commemorates, James Kilbourne, the founder of Worthington.

Perhaps there were other uses of the Kilbourne Commercial Building over the years.  The Kilbourne Commercial Building is said to be the oldest commercial building in Ohio in continuous use.

Worthington was founded in 1803 by settlers from New England. Worthington was a planned community named for Governor Thomas Worthington.

James Kilbourne was Real Living HER Worthington ribbon cuttinghistorian and author John Haueisen.  He  mentioned that at the time the historic  building was a tavern, most of Worthington was taverns.   The stage coach days?

The 2011 HER Worthington ribbon cutting included Worthington dignitaries, the Worthington Chamber of Commerce, Real Living HER management and Real Living HER Worthington agents.

The mayor of Worthington, Harvey S. Minton made a historic proclamation about the next phase in the life of the Kilbourne Commercial Building as the home of Real Living HER.

After the ribbon cutting on High Street, the 'Business After Hours' party for the Worthington Chamber of Commerce was in the courtyard of the Kilbourne Shops, a great place for a party.

679 High St. the south end of the building will open as a toy store, "Toyville" soon.

Happy Easter - 2011

Happy Easter Worthington

Blue skies and the Worthington Green...  Happy Easter 2011!

The photo is NOT from this year... the photo is looking at the Worthington Presbyterian Church across the Village Green in 2009...  Easter was in early April 2009... the trees are more leafed out this year since Easter was so late but there are no beautiful blue skies today, or Saturday, or Friday.   I can't remember before that if we were having rain... I think it has been raining all week.

Worthington Presbyterian Church Good Friday 2011

I went to the Worthington Good Friday Community Service on the Village Green on Friday but it was moved inside this year because of rain earlier in the day on Friday... this inside picture is 2011.  I had walked in once last year or the year before to see what the inside of the Worthington Presbyterian Church looked but I had never been in the sanctuary except to take a peak that one time.

I have gone to the Good Friday Community Service in the city of Worthington a number of years.  Some years it has rained.  The Good Friday service is a number of Worthington area  churches: Worthington Presbyterian, St. John's Episcopal Church, All Saints Lutheran Church, Gethsemene Lutheran Church, St. Michael's Catholic Church, The Salvation Army, The Seventh Day Adventist Church.  I hope I did not miss any.

The quote in the shape of a cross on the sign on the Worthington Green Good Friday ServiceWorthington Green is from George MacLeod (I had to Google him):

"I simply argue that the cross be raised again at the centre of the marketplace as well as on the steeple of the church."

Columbus churches (2009 also)

Happy Easter 2011!   Happy Spring 2011!

Worthington Haunted House?

Dublin Granville Road

Worthington Haunted House?

Hardly!  The Worthington house look spooky though doesn't it?

A mansard roof says "spooky" to me.  At least this time of year. This house and the Worthington Inn?

A website about haunted places,  Shadowlands, site has a number of Ohio Haunted place but nothing in Worthington.  The Shadowlands.com 'Ohio Haunted Places ' site warns against visiting the sites they have listed.  Not because of the ghosts but because they are secured, private, or patroled.  Or private property.  They are safer to visit online.

This Dublin Granville home is private property.

Worthington's Wee Folk

Door for Leprechauns at PK O'Ryans Irish Pub in Worthington OH

By wee folk I am not talking children.

It's beginning to look a lot like St. Patrick's Day in Central Ohio. Some communities more than others.

The Dublin Ohio St. Patrick's Day celebrations are on Saturday March 14,2009.

If Irish is an attitude, Dublin does it well

Columbus - downtown

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day in Central Ohio

The traditional Columbus celebrations including the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Irish Family Reunion are on St. Patrick's Day, Tuesday March 17, 2009, of course.

Worthington Wee Folk have their own door in Old Worthington. The Leprechaun Entrance shown here is right next to the door for the rest of us at  PK O'Ryans Irish Pub in Worthington

The Leprechaun entrance is at the Irish Pub in Worthington year round.

Worthington Ohio - A Ghost Town

Is Worthington Ohio a ghost town as in deserted?  Not on your life!  Worthington is a thriving Central Ohio community with a history.  I got a big kick out of the Worthington Libraries series of Ghost Stories last fall when I found them.  I found them after Halloween 2007.  I'd posted a couple on my Discover Columbus site last winter... Not scary but a bit grisley ... this is a part of Worthington history I did not know. This is my favorite Worthington Ghost Tour: The Tale of Dr. Morrow   From the Worthington Libraries starring the webmaster at Worthington Libraries, Stefan Langer, as Dr. Thomas Morrow.

Angry mobs of citizens, grave robbers, a missing body from an insane asylum?  I don't believe I had ever heard of the the story of Dr. Thomas Morrow and the Worthington Medical College's demise.  The Worthington Library has a series of videos of Worthington ghost stories that they produced in 2007.  I did not find them and amuse myself with this one until 2008.

Worthington 2008    "Worthington was founded in 1803 and has grown into a well established community while maintaining its New England atmosphere. Worthington offers a wide variety of homes, both in style and price range. The proximity to the 1-270 outer-belt with Interstate 71 and Route 315 makes transportation to downtown Columbus easy, allows fifteen to twenty minutes driving time at rush hours."

and ghosts too!  Who knew?

Confused in Columbus... or Wondering in Worthington

Scottie's is back

Maybe you have to get out and walk on High Street in Worthington or you don't really get the full effect.  I wanted an iced coffee after the gathering on the Worthington Green, yesterday,  September 11, so I walked down to the Mean Bean from the Green to get coffee. I had driven by earlier and was craving an iced coffee while I was standing there listening....

I had only been in Mean Bean Cafeine Lounge a couple of times since it was sold by the last owners of Scottie MacBean... I don't know that I even knew it's name included "Cafeine Lounge."

I still thought of it as Scottie MacBean.  Or Scottie MacBean... named for the owner's Scottie dogs...

Wait... it is Scottie MacBean again...  Excuse the bad photo it says " SCOTTIE'S IS BACK!   UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP" and then some more....  It says the new owners are Jenny and David.

Jenny waited on me.  She said she and her fiance bought it in early August and changed the name back to Scottie MacBean.

Scottie MacBeans is at 660 High St in Worthington, Ohio 43085 - Map.  Scottie MacBean started out in Linworth and moved to Old Worthington in the early or mid 90s, I believe.

I wonder what happened... to Mean Bean Cafeine Lounge in Worthington.  I don't remember when Mean Bean bought it from the last owner of Scottie MacBean but it does not seem like it was less than a year ago.  Mean Bean has a couple of stores in the City of Delaware, another in Powell???

Speaking of coffee in Worthington, September 12, 2008 is the closing date for the Starbucks at 530 N. High St in Worthington at the corner of High and South St.  I wonder does that mean that September 12 is their last day?  Or that  they are closed on September 12?  Wonder what will go in there. It was an old Friendly's Restaurant.
