Africa Road - Ohio's Underground Railroad to Freedom

Did you ever wonder about the name of Africa Road in southern Delaware County?   Where the name "Africa Road" came from?  I wondered.

An Ohio Department of Natural Resources site has a page called  Ohio's Underground Railroad to Freedom which talks about slaves coming across the Ohio River from the south. Ohio played a large part in the Underground Railroad in the 1800s.   I wondered why Africa Road.  The site says:

William Hanby Freedom Crusader

"One of the most famous Underground Railroad routes in central Ohio was Africa Road. This was the setting of one of the most extra-ordinary chapters in Underground Railroad history. The tiny unincorporated zone in southern Delaware County which was once the community of Africa touches the southern border of what is now Alum Creek State Park. Prior to 1840, the hamlet then known as East Orange was a rural crossroads north of the bustling town of Westerville. Country gentlefolk had erected small cabins there as temporary housing while building permanent homes on their estates. After a time, the woodlands north of Westerville harbored a cluster of these abandoned cabins, as folks moved into their newly completed houses."

Were the abandoned houses used by escaped slaves temporarily? Or did Africa in southern Delaware County become a community of escaped slaves? The DNR site goes on to say:  "One of the few pro-slavery landowners in the area sarcastically nicknamed the community "Africa," and the name stuck. Ever since, the community and the road have proudly kept the name, although the story behind it has been nearly forgotten"

The Worthington and Flint areas were also involved in the anti slavery movement and the Underground Railroad. Churches in Central Ohio were active in the Underground Railroad to Freedom for slaves from the south.

Ohio's  Underground Railroad to Freedom

Westervilles History

Westerville History - The Underground Railroad

Columbus Santa Connection - Westerville

The third word prompt in the NaBloPoMo is the word Freedom. I guess I am supposed to define Freedom. What came to mind first? I have to admit, the Janice Joplin song from the 1960s, "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose, " and I don't even know what that means. The word Freedom makes me think of Westerville and the history of the Underground Railroad... after I get over puzzling over the 'Me and Bobby McGee' lyrics. There is a subdivision named Freedom Colony in Westerville, in Franklin County.

On another note.... If anyone knows how to keep a Google map from shifting, I would love to know. Africa Road is east of Alum Creek Lake (reservoir) and Walnut Creek but the map keeps shifting to the west. Another mystery? The body of water on the Google map says "Williams Lake" ????? The body of water is the Alum Creek Reservoir. Who is William? Is Williams Lake another name for the Alum Creek Reservoir? Who was William? Or Williams? The Alum Creek Lake (reservoir) is not that old... was there a small lake there previously?

Walnut Bend in Westerville

Walnut Bend View from Tree Bend

Walnut Bend in Westerville is a neighborhood I really, really like.  I believe all the homes in Walnut Bend were built by MI Homes but that is NOT why I like Walnut Bend.   I like the neighborhood because thare are some great lots. Great views.  Some of the odd numbered lots on Abbotsbury Dr. have a gorgeous view and the lots on the south side of Tree Bend Drive back to the woods or some do... but the view down the street on Tree Bend Dr. is what I love most.  One of the houses on Tree Bend Ct. with a gorgeous view of Walnut Creek, the park and the Westerville Community Center went "In Contract" really quickly earlier this year.

The majority of the homes in Walnut Bend seem to be built in 2000 to 2003.

What is different abou the  Walnut Bend neighborhood than most City of Westerville neighborhoods?  Walnut Bend is in  Olentangy schools... Yes Walnut Bend is in the City of Westerville (not just a Westerville ZIP code but legally in the City of Westerville)  but the Olentangy Local School District.

Where is Walnut Bend?

Westerville Ohio

Today's entry on "365 Places to Live in Columbus" on Facebook is Westerville Ohio a northeast suburb.

From last summer on ColumbusBestBlog.com :

Westerville Ohio is the BEST Place to Live in all of Ohio.  The Columbus suburb made the list of  100 BEST Places to Live on  CNNMoney.com, a list of US cities.   Westerville at number 15  is the top city in Ohio in the list… None of the other Ohio cities that made the 100 BEST Places to Live list are in Central Ohio…

Congratulations to Westerville!

I see Delaware and Columbus in the list of Ohio cities but don’t see Gahanna, Grandview, Hilliard, New Albany Powell, Upper Arlington or Worthington….  Or Lewis Center, but Lewis Center is a place but not a city…

Foreclosure Frustation - Information Please...

Foreclosure Frustration - Information Please...

Trulia Voices

Trulia Voices question Foreclosure Frustration

"I have resorted to looking up property owners"  Barefoot said on Trulia Voices.  Barefoot a Home Buyer's question could just as likely be asked on Zillow, ActiveRain or other online real estate sites.   You as a consumer have lots of places online to get information about Foreclosures... but are they Foreclosures?  Are the properties on the list for sale now or ever?

Barefoot Home Buyer wrote "I found a property I would like to make an offer on"

Is the property for sale?

I seldom answer questions on Trulia, Zillow or ActiveRain. I am probably NOT cut out for answering questions on Trulia, Zillow etc.  I don't think I understood when I first read his question that RA meant real estate agents.   He does not want to use a real esate agent because they have not provided him the information he needs, so he is turning to Trulia Voices to provide him answers to his foreclosure frustration.

The people who answer questions on Trulia Voices are real estate agents...

Barefoot identified himself in the questioning process as a buyer for 43081 (Westerville in Central Ohio) ... but he is trying to buy property in Sanduskey Ohio (Northwest Ohio.)  He is looking for a phone number for Chase at 880 Brooksedge Blvd. Westerville Ohio 43081.  Chase must be the owner of the property he is interested in and that's why he is asking the question in Westerville 43081.

Looking for a phone number?  Goog411 business 1-800-466-4411 It's kind of like the old fashioned information operator for this century or decade anyway.  "Information Please..."

If Barefoot was looking for Foreclosures in Westerville Ohio 43081 I could help.  I have information. Real estate agents have information about the properties that are for sale.

Foreclosure Frustration - Information Please

Trulia Voices - real estate agents answering consumers questions

James Gordon in Cinci gave a great answer...

Dee in Toledo, near Sandusky wrote:

"I finally discovered that there are websites out there that post pre-foreclosures and even notice of default properties - which are NOT even on the market yet nor will they be for months and months, if ever."

The link to Foreclosures in Westerville Ohio 43081 will allow you to see a list which could include pre-foreclosures and notice of default too.  Based on using that search you will be offered the opportunity to receive the information on the foreclosures that are for sale from the Columbus Board of REALTORS® MLS.
