Upper Arlington a trip down memory "Lane"

I found list from 1951 Columbus restaurant directory  from ColumbusChefs.com looking for any info on Arlane Restaurant shown in Don O'Brien's photo of Lane Avenue Shopping Center.

It looks like the Arlane Restaurant was between a flower shop and a photographers studio in the photograph.   The 1951 list identifies the place as "Arlane Tea Room" and gives the address as "1689 W. Lane av (UA)"   It is one of very few suburban locations on the list from a 1951 directory.

I wrote this post in early May and forgot about it until I got an email from a couple who used to live in Worthington, looking for the name of an  Italian place on High Street, south of Worthington in the 1970s.  I offered Vila Nova but that is not it.  They are looking for an Italian restaurant that was on the west side of the street, south of Vila Nova.  Anyone remember?

I recommended the site where I had found this restaurant, Arlane on a list from the 1950s

Upper Arlington - Lane Avenue about 1950...  a trip down Memory Lane... there was a movie theater?  called "The Lane"

If you look at the original size photo of Lane Avenue on Dok1's Flickr Photostream you can read the street sign and see you are standing on the lot just west of Chester Rd. looking south at shops on Lane Avenue including a movie theater.  I put the blue pin in the map on the corner with the street sign.   Lane Avenue Columbus, Ohio: circa 1950

A flower shop, The Craft Shop, Arlane Restaurant...and other shops you can see better in the larger original photo on Flickr  were located on W. Lane Avenue when the shopping center was new.

There are a number of old photos featured on my Worthington Ohio real estate site, from Don O'Brien (Dok1 on Flickr) in both Worthington history and Old Worthington.  His Flickr Photostream has pictures of the Worthington area in the 1930s and 1940s and other Central Ohio locations.

The April 2010 home sales in Upper Arlington were in Canterbury, Guilford Place, Knolls Arlington, River Ridge and other neighborhoods.  There were sales in the neighborhood often identified as "South of Lane" or "south of Lane" and in one case this month, "Old Arlington."

Upper Arlington area is #20 of '365 Places to Live in Columbus' on ColumbusBestBlog and Facebook.

There are some wonderful photos from Upper Arlington's history on Flickr from UA Archives | Upper Arlington History  or go directly to their website.  UA Archives  Pictures of people, places, houses and more.   UA Archives looks like a  joint effort of the Upper Arlington Library, the Upper Arlington Historical Society and the Upper Arlington City School District.

Do you recognize names on the 1880's map?  Miller as in Miller Park, McCoy as in McCoy Rd.  Kenney....  the map is much larger on Flickr.

The news Monday from the Columbus Board of REALTORS® Columbus home sales highest since... said:

"The month’s supply has dropped 30 percent from last year. Last year at this time, the months supply was 9.82 meaning that if no new homes were added to the market, it would take almost ten months to sell all remaining inventory. Today, that number is down to 6.86. A market is typically considered balanced with around a 6.5 to 7 months supply."

CBR (Columbus Board of REALTORS®) compares the October 2009 home sales for the MLS as a whole to October 2006.
