Columbus OH - Doo Dah Parade 2010

The Doo Dah Parade - Columbus, OH

The Doo Dah Parade is my favorite part of the 4th of July.  The Doo Dah Parade is on Sunday July 4, 2010 at 1:00 PM.  The rain date is usually the day before isn't it? You would not be out of place sitting on the side of the street from  11:00 AM...

Who is in the Doo Dah Parade in Columbus?  Who ever... (or is it whom ever?)  wants to be.  You just show up.   According to the Doo Dah website:

"2010 Less-Than-Grand Marshal:  Ann Fisher of WOSU AM/FM/TV (in 3D) escorted (hopefully) by Police Horses Buddy & Harry (could be two plastic rocking horses)"

In 3D????

The 3D slide show is from the Doo Dah Parade- Columbus OH 2008.  We sat on Neil Avenue in Victorian Village,  last year we got there late so we stood right on High St. in the Short North.  I have photos of that Parade, lots of the Donato's in the background... I prefer Victorian homes in the background.

A favorite of mine year after year?  The Marching Fidels... Each year politics and current events make the Doo Dah Parade new and exciting and unpredictable.

More Fourth of July in Central OH - 2010

The Gallery Hop

Jenis at the Short North

We went to the Gallery Hop in the Short North on Saturday night.  How could we not go? It was over 70 degrees during the afternoon.

The official website of the Short North Arts District is a handy site.

People were lined up for ice cream at Jeni's as you can see in the picture... really my phone's camera does NOT do this justice.

It has been about 15 months since I have been to the Gallery Hop.  The Gallery Hop is always the first Saturday of each month.  I used to go to the Galery Hop a lot.

One of the best things about the Gallery Hop for me is the people watching.  Part of the people watching is what they wear of course.  There was everything from flip flops to boots as far as footwear.  I saw shorts.  I saw strapless dresses.  Others resisted the urge to break out their summer clothes.

I live in the far north reaches of the city of Columbus, north of 270... yet there are pieces of Columbus north of me in Delaware County....  the drive down to the Short North is 15 miles and about 22 minutes.

Heres' a Real Living video about the area (& more.)  One of the "art car" owners narrates the story.  That Car (that's the license plate) with the baby heads... I guess doll parts is a more appropriate description... was parked on the west side at the south end of High Street on Saturday night, I got a couple of marginal photos...

Short North & More

The next gallery hop is April 4, 2009.

"Give me Liberty or give me GAS"

give me gas

"GIVE ME LIBERTY or GIVE ME GAS"  was  the theme of one of the entries in this years Doo Dah Parade in Columbus's Short North. A lot of the Doo Dah Parade this year was about gas prices... not all of the parade was gas prices... but a lot of it was gas prices.

The Doo Dah Parade is not your ordinary 4th of July parade. The Doo Dah Parade is parody... the Doo Dah is living editorial cartoons.

Today's Columbus Dispatch editorial cartoon is about gas prices.... and about the state of the news.   Jeff Stahler, Editorial cartoonist for The Columbus Dispatch - July 6, 2008, All gas prices, all of the time.

Using restraint Stahler only used editorial cartoons about gas prices twice in June 2008.

I like variety in the Doo Dah Parade but I really like it when the Doo Dah parade is very local... back in the days when Buck Rinehart was the mayor there was lots of fun local things to pick fun at... RineWAD bikers dragging an SUVhart was the 2008 Doo Dah Parade's "Less Than Grand Marshall. "

Rinehart was quoted in the Columbus Dispatch that this was the first year since leaving office (1992?) that he was at the parade.  He said

" I went every year during office to see what they were going to do to me," he said. "They liked to make fun of me."

Even with all the crazyness the Doo Dah Parade has rules which include:

"NO FULL NUDITY!"

and all politician's have to wear  a funny hat...

Of course there were perennial Doo Dah favorites like the Marching Fidels but the Doo Dah Parade 2008, had lots of pedicabs, bikes and mopeds.  Bicyclists with WAD (Westerville to Arena District Bikeway) dragged an SUV up Neil Avenue.  ;-  )

The photo of  WAD in the Columbus Dispatch in "Whoop-de Doo Dah!" is better
