Columbus Ohio's Haunted Ship

Ghost ship

Columbus Ohio -The Haunted Ship

The haunted ship is of course the Santa Maria at Halloweeen time.  According to the Santa Maria website:

"The Haunted ship is held October 29. 30 and Oct. 31 from 7-10 PM"

The Santa Maria website says:

"Once a year the Santa Maria, a full size replica of Christopher Columbus’ flagship serving as a history museum, turns into a Pirate Ship."

Or two, maybe three times a year if it will get people aboard...we went to see the Santa Maria on Talk Like a Pirate Day in September... I believe the 2009 calendar had pirate weekends in the spring. I say milk this pirate thing as long as you can Santa Maria if it is helping you get people into the history museum  floating on the east bank of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus.

One of the pirates told us in September that the poor soul in the cage was named Becky....  you can not see her here in this picture.

Columbus Ohio the Santa Maria

Columbus Ohio the Santa Maria has been parked on the Scioto River since 1992.

Santa Maria replica in Columbus OHI visited the Santa Maria in September 2009.  I don't have any kids...

I visited the Santa Maria on Talk Like a Pirate Day 2009 in September.

The Santa Maria in Columbus Ohio is the most authentic replica of Christopher Columbus's ship in the world.

How do I know that?  A sign at the Columbus "floating" museum in downtown Columbus told me so.  I believe the Santa Maria website (link above ) does too.  Yep

"Make your plans now to visit the world's most authentic, museum-quality replica of Christopher Columbus' flagship."

The real Santa Maria

The Santa Maria was not a very big ship.  It is hard to imagine it crossing the ocean.  It is hard to imagine what life on the ship was like... with all those other people.  Our tour guides  and the "pirates"  on board the Santa Maria on Talk Like a Pirate Day did a good job of giving an idea of what life on Columbus ship would have been like... and also life on a pirate ship, since it was Talk Like a Pirate Day.  The man dressed up as the ships surgeon showed us surgical tools of Columbus day and later when pirates sailed theColumbus OH Santa Maria crows nest from the deck high seas.  Our tour guide on the Santa Maria shared the story of everyday life on a ship in days gone by, eating, sleeping, bodily functions... there is a replica of 1492 "toilet paper"  but I'll save that story for another day.

Columbus Ohio the Santa Maria

According to the Santa Maria website this authentic representation is less than 1000 100* feet long. The Santa Maria website says:

"THE WORLD WAS FOREVER CHANGED when, in 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail searching for a direct trade route to the Indies. Carrying him was the Santa Maria, a 98-foot wooden "nao", or typical cargo ship."

We visited the cargo hold on the Santa Maria...  heard stories of what cargo would have been down there in Columbus day and what else would have been down there... scary...  It is amazing how little cargo the Santa Maria held.

Columbus Ohio Santa Maria Talk Like a Pirate Day 2009

The Santa Maria was board by pirates on 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' in September 2009 despite a lot of canon fire.

Loud canon fire...

There was sword play, gun play and loss of life aboard the Santa Maria that day... all re-enacted of course.  Do you see the dead man on the deck in my photo?

Columbus Ohio from the Santa Maria

Columbus Ohio is just one city in the US named for Christopher Columbus.   Columbus Ohio is the biggest Columbus in the world.

Until October each year, I seldom remember that the Columbus in Columbus Ohio is in honor of a man who sailed the Atlantic Ocean back in the 15th century and found the Carribean Islands and thought he was in India.

We were lucky the day we went to downtown Columbus to visit the Santa Maria in September because we had a 6 year old visiting who LOVES pirates.  There was lots more to do downtown between Via Colori and Independent's Day.  There was more going on across the river at Genoa Park that September weekend.  There was Water Fire Friday and Saturday that weeekend.

Columbus Ohio's downtown is alive. Columbus from the santa maria

Week in and week out... downtown Columbus there are things to do.

Talk Like a Pirate Day 2009

Columbus is "cool"  for kids

Experience Columbus Days - Columbus Ohio Why do we celebrate Columbus Days October 2009

Still coming up in October 2009 on the Santa Maria?

The Haunted Ship.  According to the Santa Maria website: "The Haunted ship is held October 29. 30 and Oct. 31 from 7-10 PM."

* Thanks to Jon Zolsky for emailing me I have a typo... one too many 0 in the size.  Tiny, tiny, tiny ship.

Scioto Audubon Metro Park

Maureen McCabe Scioto Audubon Metro Park is unique because it is just a mile south of downtown Columbus. We went to see the newest Columbus Metro Park on Sunday August 30, 2009.

The Scioto Audubon Metro Park and the Grange Audubon Center is right on the Scioto river, west of the Brewery District and German Village. A point of reference for some although I am not showing it in the photos here? The Columbus Police Department Impound Lot is at 400 W. Whittier Street, or actually the facility on the Whittier Peninsula is the City's Parking Violation Bureau including the CPD's impound lot. I have some photos that show the impound lot with the sun gleaming off the cars.

Hey... I guess you get a glimpse of the impound lot in the picture of the bird feeders. To the right edge of the photo there's some cars and a fence. In front of the Columbus skyline? That's the edge of a huge impound lot! Look south from high rises in the city of Columbus and you can see it too.

The Grange Audubon Center is gorgeous....and interesting. I wanted to see the green roof...

A slide show. Just a few of the photos I took on a very grey day. Mostly the photos are of the building, Grange Insurance Audubon Center. It is gorgeous. Classrooms, displays, a library, a nature store, all surrounded by observation decks overlooking the wetlands, the river, the skyline from the south.

Whittier Peninsula - Metro Park

Maureen McCabe The Whittier Peninsula just south of downtown Columbus bringing nature to downtown Columbus. Friday August 28, 2009 a new Metro Park was dedicated. Scioto Audobon Metro Park The 71 acre park on is on the Whittier Peninsula, just south of Downtown Columbus.

Here's a great slideshow geologically, historically speaking going way, way back long before the park was reclaimed, before Columbus was founded, before modern Indian history, way back when Ohio was underwater... The Whittier Peninsula. Bringing Nature Downtown .

I've been watching the progress of the park on Whittier Peninsula for a few years. I am going to go discover the new park for myself this weekend.

Downtown Columbus - Festival Latino is FREE

Festival Latino 2009Festival Latino Columbus Ohio turn off the music

When:  August 15 - 16, 2009*

That's this weekend.

Where: Genoa Park, near COSI

I love the music.

I love the food.

I love watching the dancing

Looks like from the website there is  Jamaican, Puerto Rican and Peruvian fare this year.  Well of course there is also Mexican food and "plain old"  American too.  The festival food, lemonade, fries, hot dogs, etc.

* Festival Latino  seems to be an early family oriented event....  last performer each day is 6:30.   I did not go last year (it was not free....) but I go most years.  I was surprised how early it ends.

Silencio Por Favor?

At the office planning your weekend?

Rest of the family sleeping?

Music Alert

Actually it's not music the Festival Latino Promo Announcement starts as  soon as you get to the website.   Then it goes into music.  A rather large and startling sound starts as soon as you hit the Festival Latino 2009 website.

Turn down your speaker or the player on the Festival Latino 2009 site is on the right side of the page.   Clicking on another page just starts it over.

Festival Latino Spanish PromoClick the button on the left or use the volume control if you are in a cubicle at work and really should not be planning your weekend...  or if you are reading this late at night and the family is all asleep....

well you know what I mean.

Festival Latino 2009   You were warned!

Columbus Discover LOST EGYPT at COSI

COSI Media & VIP Preview

I got to preview the LOST EGYPT exhibit which opened today at COSI on Thursday.  I skipped school (a real estate class I have gone to on Thursday mornings) to be at the preview of this World Premiere Exhibit.

The special exhibit at COSI opened today and runs through September 7, 2009.

COSI’s LOST EGYPT blog on the COSI website gives lots of behind the scenes info on this world premiere event in Columbus.

camelI was trying to look at the LOST EGYPT exhibit through the eyes of my favorite six year old Indiana Jones enthusiast or nearly six years old. I was watching the Columbus Mommy bloggers and their little ones to see what interested them. Pictures of modern day Egypt and Egyptians? Building a pyramid? Putting the shards of a pot back together? The shifting sands of the desert?

Or… the real human mummy, now known as Annie, an unidentified girl about 16 to 18 years old.

There was so much to see I missed the real animal mummies and why the Egyptians would  have mummified animals.

The camel here is NOT real. archeaologist

The pretty young woman being interviewed is a real living archaeologist. An archaeologist with a great accent. Mark Lehner, a world renowned archaeologist spoke to the group of media (including bloggers) and VIPs Thursday about finding LOST EGYPT. Lehner has been in Egypt for 30 plus years. The archaeologists  are just here for the grand opening.   The exhibit at  COSI has short recorded presentations with archeaologists and other scientists throughout the exhibit.

I will have to go back to see the LOST EGYPT exhibit again. Maybe when a certain six year old comes to town.

Columbus is a great town for kids.  Lots to discover at COSI, the Zoo, the Metro Parks  and more.

I wrote about the COSI LOST EGYPT exhibit on ann another blog, ColumbusBestBlog.com

COSI it's  the real thing
