Talk Like A Pirate Day - 2011

I miss Art Blanchet.... This a Re-Blog of his post from his Talk Like a Pirate Day 2008...post titled "Talk Like a Pirate DayCrows Nest Santa Maria - But Which Pirate?" Art  had already been talking like a pirate for a few years and he knew lots of movie pirates.

I saw a pirates wandering around Downtown Columbus on Saturday, I did not get as far west as the Scioto River but I walked around Independents Day a bit and so it seems did pirates.

Local pirates?  Pirates visiting Columbus for the weekend?

It was "Talk Like a Pirate" weekend at the Santa Maria, this past weekend.

These photos are from 'Talk Like a Pirate" Day or Weekend in 2009.  We went to the Santa Maria that year.

Arrrgh....

Ahoy?

Avast?

Calling people "scurvey dogs" is that what the pirate with the hook in the commercial for Zoombeezie Bay calls the  kids on the water slide? They are trying to rush him?  Inner-tube gets popped?

Columbus Ohio from the Santa Maria

Art Blanchet was a loan officer in Wisconsin.  At some point he relocated to beautiful Sebastian Florida.  Florida would be much more conducive to playing pirate...

Can you talk "pirate"?  Which pirate do you talk?

Via Art Blanchet - Stranger in a Warm Land (On the Outside Lookin' In):

Avast!

Unlike many of ye scoundrels. me and the lads have been a'celebrating "Talk Like A Pirate Day" for three years now.  But what do I gain from it?

Hard to tell.  But this day celebrates one of my favorite characters and seems intent on teaching the language of the "traditional" pirate, not the more celebrated pirates with British accents and gentlemanly ways.

Worst pirate accents?  A list will follow, but my heart belongs to the one and only "real" pirate from Disney's Treasure Island - none other than Long John Silver,  He could drop his H's (remember Jim "Awkins?) like a limey without sounding pretentious or sophisticated.

Now for a few so-so and nasty pirate accents from the movies:

  1. Jack Sparrow- sorry ladies, but the slurred drunken speech is probably accurate, but he has more the mannerisms of a circus carnie than a true pirate.
  2. Dread Pirate Roberts- cool accent for the movie Princess Bride - and easier to understand, but the runt never had a cutlass nor a blunderbuss.  Didn't he cry for his Mommy when tortured?
  3. Errol Flynn - Captain Black.  Can we say "finishing school?"
  4. Captain Hook - Mr Mumbles with a prosthetic hand.  Intimidating as a bag of marshmallows.
  5. Jean LaFitte- The Buccaneer.  Yul Brynner was very cad-like, but he even helped Andrew Jackson win the Battle of New Orleans during the second War of Independence - the War of 1812.  Bah!
  6. Sinbad the Sailor- Douglas Fairbanks.  Scary in a "don't make me come up there" kind of way.  Great athlete, however.
  7. The Crimson Pirate - Burt Lancaster.  Can't obey a skipper who smiles like a toothpaste commercial.  Boo!
  8. Pirate Movie - Gena Davisis the baddie.  Considered one of seafaring's worst movies.  Davey Jones is rolling over in his watery grave.
  9. Captain Feathersword of the Wiggles - scarier than the above lot as he dances AND tickles.  A multi-tasker if there ever was one.
  10. The Pirates of Penzance - well, this wasn't meant to be terrifying, but Kevin Kline and his band sure had a way with the colonial ladies, and any pirate alive (or dead) would have to respect that.

That's it - I'm at a loss for more.  Throw me a few of yours and we'll compare - have a "hearty" day

Columbus: Talk Like a Pirate Weekend

Columbus Ohio from the Santa Maria

It's Talk like a Pirate weekend at the Santa Maria in Downtown Columbus, September 17 to the 18th, 2011.

I took these photos  a couple of years ago when we went down to the Santa Maria on Talk Like a Pirate Day.

The Santa Maria website promises:

"Talk like a Pirate Weekend: 11-5pm Saturday and Sunday. Pirate re-enactors from around the country will bring their colorful language and manners to the ship for lots of fun and frolic."

  Crows Nest Santa Maria

The official National?  International?  "Talk Like a Pirate Day" is always the 19th of September, we'll be way ahead of the rest if Columbus says "Arrrrr!" all weekend!

Here's a site to help you with the words to use to Talk like a pirate

Language  - Look for the page titled  "Why talk like a pirate - and how"

"Ahoy!" means  "Hello!"

"Arrr!" is multipurpose...

Inquiring minds probably says Why? Why Talk like a Pirate?

The page titled "Why talk like a pirate - and how" says:

"The point is, there is no point."

Columbus Ohio, the Santa Maria

Besides Talk Like a Pirate Weekend there are more events in Downtown Columbus this weekend.  September 17 to 18 events include

Independents Day on Saturday.

City Hop on Saturday

"Community Open House" at  COSI on Sunday

For time and location of these events and others throughout Central Ohio visit ExperienceColumbus.com

Columbus Ohio's Haunted Ship - 2009

Ghost ship

Columbus Ohio -The Haunted Ship

The haunted ship is of course the Santa Maria at Halloweeen time.  According to the Santa Maria website:

"The Haunted ship is held October 29. 30 and Oct. 31 from 7-10 PM"

The Santa Maria website says:

"Once a year the Santa Maria, a full size replica of Christopher Columbus’ flagship serving as a history museum, turns into a Pirate Ship."

Or two, maybe three times a year if it will get people aboard...we went to see the Santa Maria on Talk Like a Pirate Day in September... I believe the 2009 calendar had pirate weekends in the spring. I say milk this pirate thing as long as you can Santa Maria if it is helping you get people into the history museum  floating on the east bank of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus.

One of the pirates told us in September that the poor soul in the cage was named Becky....  you can not see her here in this picture.

Columbus Ohio the Santa Maria

Columbus Ohio the Santa Maria has been parked on the Scioto River since 1992.

Santa Maria replica in Columbus OHI visited the Santa Maria in September 2009.  I don't have any kids...

I visited the Santa Maria on Talk Like a Pirate Day 2009 in September.

The Santa Maria in Columbus Ohio is the most authentic replica of Christopher Columbus's ship in the world.

How do I know that?  A sign at the Columbus "floating" museum in downtown Columbus told me so.  I believe the Santa Maria website (link above ) does too.  Yep

"Make your plans now to visit the world's most authentic, museum-quality replica of Christopher Columbus' flagship."

The real Santa Maria

The Santa Maria was not a very big ship.  It is hard to imagine it crossing the ocean.  It is hard to imagine what life on the ship was like... with all those other people.  Our tour guides  and the "pirates"  on board the Santa Maria on Talk Like a Pirate Day did a good job of giving an idea of what life on Columbus ship would have been like... and also life on a pirate ship, since it was Talk Like a Pirate Day.  The man dressed up as the ships surgeon showed us surgical tools of Columbus day and later when pirates sailed theColumbus OH Santa Maria crows nest from the deck high seas.  Our tour guide on the Santa Maria shared the story of everyday life on a ship in days gone by, eating, sleeping, bodily functions... there is a replica of 1492 "toilet paper"  but I'll save that story for another day.

Columbus Ohio the Santa Maria

According to the Santa Maria website this authentic representation is less than 1000 100* feet long. The Santa Maria website says:

"THE WORLD WAS FOREVER CHANGED when, in 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail searching for a direct trade route to the Indies. Carrying him was the Santa Maria, a 98-foot wooden "nao", or typical cargo ship."

We visited the cargo hold on the Santa Maria...  heard stories of what cargo would have been down there in Columbus day and what else would have been down there... scary...  It is amazing how little cargo the Santa Maria held.

Columbus Ohio Santa Maria Talk Like a Pirate Day 2009

The Santa Maria was board by pirates on 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' in September 2009 despite a lot of canon fire.

Loud canon fire...

There was sword play, gun play and loss of life aboard the Santa Maria that day... all re-enacted of course.  Do you see the dead man on the deck in my photo?

Columbus Ohio from the Santa Maria

Columbus Ohio is just one city in the US named for Christopher Columbus.   Columbus Ohio is the biggest Columbus in the world.

Until October each year, I seldom remember that the Columbus in Columbus Ohio is in honor of a man who sailed the Atlantic Ocean back in the 15th century and found the Carribean Islands and thought he was in India.

We were lucky the day we went to downtown Columbus to visit the Santa Maria in September because we had a 6 year old visiting who LOVES pirates.  There was lots more to do downtown between Via Colori and Independent's Day.  There was more going on across the river at Genoa Park that September weekend.  There was Water Fire Friday and Saturday that weeekend.

Columbus Ohio's downtown is alive. Columbus from the santa maria

Week in and week out... downtown Columbus there are things to do.

Talk Like a Pirate Day 2009

Columbus is "cool"  for kids

Experience Columbus Days - Columbus Ohio Why do we celebrate Columbus Days October 2009

Still coming up in October 2009 on the Santa Maria?

The Haunted Ship.  According to the Santa Maria website: "The Haunted ship is held October 29. 30 and Oct. 31 from 7-10 PM."

* Thanks to Jon Zolsky for emailing me I have a typo... one too many 0 in the size.  Tiny, tiny, tiny ship.

Scioto Audubon Metro Park

Maureen McCabe Scioto Audubon Metro Park is unique because it is just a mile south of downtown Columbus. We went to see the newest Columbus Metro Park on Sunday August 30, 2009.

The Scioto Audubon Metro Park and the Grange Audubon Center is right on the Scioto river, west of the Brewery District and German Village. A point of reference for some although I am not showing it in the photos here? The Columbus Police Department Impound Lot is at 400 W. Whittier Street, or actually the facility on the Whittier Peninsula is the City's Parking Violation Bureau including the CPD's impound lot. I have some photos that show the impound lot with the sun gleaming off the cars.

Hey... I guess you get a glimpse of the impound lot in the picture of the bird feeders. To the right edge of the photo there's some cars and a fence. In front of the Columbus skyline? That's the edge of a huge impound lot! Look south from high rises in the city of Columbus and you can see it too.

The Grange Audubon Center is gorgeous....and interesting. I wanted to see the green roof...

A slide show. Just a few of the photos I took on a very grey day. Mostly the photos are of the building, Grange Insurance Audubon Center. It is gorgeous. Classrooms, displays, a library, a nature store, all surrounded by observation decks overlooking the wetlands, the river, the skyline from the south.

Whittier Peninsula - Metro Park

The Whittier Peninsula just south of downtown Columbus bringing nature to downtown Columbus. Friday August 28, 2009 a new Metro Park was dedicated. Scioto Audobon Metro Park The 71 acre park on is on the Whittier Peninsula, just south of Downtown Columbus.

Here's a great slideshow geologically, historically speaking going way, way back long before the park was reclaimed, before Columbus was founded, before modern Indian history, way back when Ohio was underwater... The Whittier Peninsula. Bringing Nature Downtown .

I've been watching the progress of the park on Whittier Peninsula for a few years. I am going to go discover the new park for myself this weekend.
