High St. Columbus OH. 43214... It's back!

High St, Columbus OH. 43214 -  It's back!

It's the Pierce Cleaners sign.  It was gone for a bit for repairs after a car hit it.  The business has been serving the neighborhood since 1946. Is the sign that old?

High St. Columbus OH 43214 Pierce Cleaners sign

If you look closely there is a ladder and a man is painting the frame... behind where it says "Go Bucks."

The Pierce Cleaners sign at   5205 High St. Columbus OH 43214 went back up earlier this week.  I was told it said "Honk if you've missed our sign" or something like that.

When I went by it said "GO BUCKS."

Sharon Heights neighborhood in the news...

Welcome to Clintonville sign at Worthington lineSharon Heights is a north Columbus neighborhood...   The Toledo Blade called the Columbus neighborhood that President Obama visited yesterday, "Sharon Heights."

"Microphone in hand in town hall-style, the President spoke and took questions from a small crowd sitting at picnic tables in the backyard of architect Joe Weithman, his wife, Rhonda, and their two children in the tree-lined, residential Columbus neighborhood of Sharon Heights. The family benefited on more than one front from the $787 billion economic stimulus package that Mr. Obama pushed through Congress last year almost exclusively with Democratic votes."

E. Kanawha Avenue? ...That is Sharon Heights, Clintonville area... Zillow refers to it as Sharon Heights

Monday all of the local news I heard called the area that the President would visit "Clintonville" .... my office was all concerned on Monday about traffic west of interstate 71 Oakland Park and E. North Broadway ... which is Clintonville.

Where does Clintonville begin or end? South of the sign in the image above.  The sign welcoming you to Clintonville is at the south end of Worthington

High St. Columbus OH 43214 - Sharon Heights neighborhood.

Bob's Bar... The Cultural Hub of the Midwest

Bob's Bar High St. Columbus - The Cultural Hub of the MidwestI have a listing right near Bob's Bar the self proclaimed 'Cultural Hub of the Midwest ' but I never thought I would actually go into Bob's Bar....  for so many reasons.  I was surprised when a co-worker sent the whole office an email on Friday morning saying "be there or be square"  about Bob's Bar.

The "be there or be square" was about meeting at the north Columbus bar for happy hour.

I have a picture of the Bob's Bar sign in a previous post about my listing at 301 Girard Rd. Columbus OH 43214.  Bob's Bar is walking distance to that home. An easy walk.

Why I never thought I would ever actually go to Bob's Bar?  Why I never thought I would actually set foot in  Bob's Bar...  "The Cultural Hub of the Midwest"

  1. I don't go to "bars"
  2. I am not a beer drinker.
  3. A series of funny YELP reviews. The YELP reviews made me expect a dirty place with snotty, immature clientele and bad service.

Here's just a snippet of one of the funniest YELP reviews of a Columbus business...  Melanie a 20 Something who has reviewed Bob's Bar three times on Yelp wrote:

"Every thirty-something on the north side whose biological clock is about to explode and / or who is recently divorced or cheating seems to hang out here.  I have only encountered skeezy people at this bar and all of them have bad taste in music. "

That is just a small piece of one of Melanie's funny reviews of Bob's Bar.  I wish I would have reread it before I went I could have looked for "skeezy people", I would have listened for those clocks ticking...  I worried I would feel very, very old at Bob's Bar...

Bob's Bar is at 4961 N. High St. Columbus Ohio 43214.  It is just south of Graceland, north of Morse Road.

I was pleasantly surprised by Bob's Bar.  Only five of us showed up.  The rest of the Real Living HER Worthington office are squares? To be fair it  was the second "Happy Hour" with the office we were invited to this week.  The first was in Powell...which while nice is certainly not The Cultural Hub of the Midwest.

Delawanda Park neighborhood the best of all worlds

Clintonville businesses don't judge a marquee by it's cover another funny YELP review of a N. High St. business... YELP calls it a "Clintonville business."

Edit May 2011 the link to the listing was going to Real Living's site... not my site on Real Living.  Not Real Living HER's site (local) but the brand's site.  Changes in late 2010 and early 2011 with Real Living websites... the old Real Living website the link would have gone to the Real Living Realtime  (Realtime?  Real Time ) Listing and showed that the property sold, when it sold. What it sold for.... you know transparency? Providing consumers information.  That was a feature we had long, long ago in Columbus... It was something that made Real Living HER so far ahead of other real estate companies.  It's gone links are forwarded to the national site.

Progress!!!

Pita Hut on N. High Street

Pita Hut N Grille N. High St. Columbus OH 43214Pita Hut or I guess it is Pita Hut N Grille is right next door to Bob's Bar.  I got a twofer Friday evening.  I met some co-workers at  Bob's Bar,   "The Cultural Hub of the Midwest" for "happy hour" on Friday.  There were only 5 of us who went to Bob's Bar.  The "be there or be square" was not a big enough challenge for most in our Worthington office.  Only two of us went to Pita Hut.

The hungry ones.

Pita Hut N Grille is at 4965 N. High St. Columbus Ohio 43214.  The north Columbus area might be referred to as the "Clintonville Beechwold area" or Sharon Heights.  The residential areas nearby are Delawanda Park and Old Beechwold.  This not so pretty strip mall is just south of Graceland Shopping Center.

I took the photo of Pita Hut N Grille when I listed a house at  301 Girard Rd. Columbus Ohio 43214 which is nearby, walking distance.  I had never eaten at Pita Hut before...  I should have taken a photo of my food with my cell phone Friday night.  What kind of a poor excuse for a blogger am I?  I am not a food blogger, obviously.  I had the kebab sandwich and fries.   My friend had a falafel sandwich.

I don't eat bread but I am very shy about asking if I can order a sandwich without bread especially the first time I eat in a restaurant. Especially if it is an ethnic restaurant, I don't usually ask if I can order a sandwich without bread or ask how things are prepared.  There were forks!!!  The people at the restauarnt were very nice...  I guess I should have just ordered kebabs no worries about bread.

When I ordered a Diet Coke...  the man waiting on me did not say "Pepsi no Coke"  ;- (

Pita Hut N Grille describes it' self as "Fine Middle Eastern Cuisine."   I will go back.  It was OK.  It was fun.

More about the area:

Graceland Shopping Center  -  history

Sharon Heights everything turns out all right - recent history

The Delawanda -  a business on N. High  in the 1920s.  The Delawanda Park and Ride is where The Delawanda stood in the 1920s.  Wondering how wide the frontage  of the property was.  I wonder if this strip mall is on what was The Delawanda too.  I believe it was.

High St. Columbus Ohio 43214

The sign on the 5200 block of  High St. Columbus Ohio ... I'd call it Clintonville but that would just be wrong... ;- )   Even if  the sign up the road at the south end of Worthington says "Welcome to Clintonville."

The Pierce Cleaners sign on Hight Street today....

Pierce Cleaners Temp sign 8 5 2010

Pierce Cleaners is located at  5205 N. High St. Columbus Ohio 43214... That's Sharon Heights?

Here's a close up of the temporary sign...  today. The   Pierce Cleaners "We're Open" sign up now.  The Pierce Cleaners sign says "Our sign will be back soon!" and also says "The historical sign is out for restoration. "

Pierce Cleaners Temp sign 8 5 2010

The historical and witty Pierce Cleaners sign on High Street...  My photo was taken since the Taco Bell was built on the east side of the road... so it is within the last couple of years.  There is no snow but no leaves either...

Pierce Cleaners sign my photo

I am relieved to see officially that the Pierce Cleaners sign is being repaired.  Not that I doubted the word of a friend who is a Pierce Cleaners customer.  He heard that the historic and witty sign on High Street had been hit by a car and was being restored.   He heard it from a Pierce Cleaners employee.   I believed him.... but I love the temporary sign verifying the sign is recovering.

High St. in Clintonville... never too late...

High St. in Clintonville what is missing now?  A landmark on High St.  at 5250 N. High St... Make that 5205  N. High St.  High Street at Westview so that would be Sharon Heights, a Clintonville community.  The Pierce Cleaners sign that you always had to glance to look and see what it said.

Pierce Cleaners Clintonville Beechwold area

The front and back of the Pierce Cleaners sign could be different pithy statements so you had to look  to  see coming and going.  Or use your rear view mirror to read what the Pierce Cleaners sign said.   Carefully of course.  High St.  has lots of traffic today.

Pierce Cleaners was established in 1946.  At this site?

The Pierce Cleaners sign on High St. in Clintonville was gone when I drove by yesterday.  A friend says it happened Wednesday so it was NOT there when I drove by at least twice on Thursday.    ColumbusBestBlog.com has a photo from yesterday... Pierce Cleaners sign... heck my photo  is just a cell phone photo post accident.  A day or two later?    A woman racing a COTA bus for the corner hit the Pierce Cleaners sign?  I heard it on Facebook from a coworker who heard it from Pierce Cleaners employees when Pierce Cleaners sign Columbus OH July 23, 2010he stopped to pick up his shirts.

The "NEVER TOO LATE TO BE WHO YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN"  top photo is George Campbell's photo from  his Flickr photostream...  HAVEBEEN ... kinda ran it together.   Campbell's photo is from 2007.

A landmark.... Another photo on Flickr. another pithy statement.  William Flood who writes and shoot the photos for Columbus Neon has a photo on Flickr too...

Flickr William Flood's Pierce Cleaners Photo on Flickr - All Rights Reserved. I believe Flood has a version of the photo (the same saying) on his blog at night.

Yelp...   funny review of Pierce Cleaners most more about the sign than the service, business. Yelp Pierce Cleaners reviews.  Laughing at the review where the employees are not entertaining... like the sign, Heather writes:

"Well, don't just a marquee by its cover.  I found them to be lacking in the personality department and completely unconcerned with hearing about how I was prompted to come in because of their funny sayings on the marquee outside."

High St. in Clintonville or Sharon Heights or whatever the area is called will not be the same without the Pierce Cleaners sign.  The business was established in 1946 could the sign be that old?   It's old.  RIP? Part of me wants to believe the damage was minimal and the old sign was rushed to the neon sign hospital and in stable condition.

Another photo with another pithy statement...  Roadside Peak  a look at neon in the Midwest found the Pierce Cleaners sign saying "I NEVER MET A CALORIE I DIDNT LIKE"

I have to have more photos somewhere..  not at night... not artsy, just capturing the signs clever, pithy statements.   Do you have any photos of the Pierce Cleaners sign?  What was it saying?

Sharon Heights everything turns out allright

Welcome to Clintonville sign at Worthington lineIt's a proud day for Sharon Heights a Columbus neighborhood.  COTA is NOT going to disrupt the Sharon Heights neighborhood with a bus turnaround where a strip mall stands near the corner of High and Kanawha.

Sharon Heights neighborhood map  and surrounding area.

The Columbus Dispatch article about the outcome  Outcry in Clintonville Sinks COTA Turnaround Plan is written by Collin Binkley.  It says:

"Facing pressure from Clintonville residents, the board of the Central Ohio Transit Authority unanimously turned down a proposal last night to transform a fully occupied N. High Street strip mall into a turnaround for buses."

Reading articles in This Week Clintonville, published just this week, the residents of this Clintonville area community banded together and voiced their displeasure at the proposed change.  The residents of Sharon Heights stood up for the businesses that would have been disrupted in the strip mall in their community.

The residents of Sharon Heights or Clintonville were not aware of COTA plans until quite recently. The Columbus Dispatch article says COTA has been working on this site for the turnaround for two years.  The buses will continue to turnaround at Graceland Shopping Center for now.  Casto could give COTA a 30 day notice that they can NOT use Graceland... it says so in the Columbus Dispatch.

Sharon Heights is a Clintonville community

I don't think I could have told you where Sharon Heights was until June 2010... I drive through the Sharon Heights neighborhood or by it on High St. all the times.  My favorite spot for gyros is in Sharon Heights...  I used to get my haircut in Sharon Heights.  The cute little Lustron house on Kanawha is in Sharon Heights.   In June my seller at 301 Girard Rd. Columbus OH 43214 said

"Zillow says our house is in Sharon Heights..."

Yes Zillow and Trulia say  the Delawanda Park neighborhood is in Sharon Heights but an old Sharon Heights website says the Graceland Shopping Center is the southern point of  Sharon Heights.  Delawanda Park is south of Graceland and north of Old Beechwold.

An old Sharon Heights Community Association website (schedule with 2002 meetings... old*)  defines Sharon Heights boundaries:

"

Sharon Heights Boundaries from Sharon Heights Communtiy Association "

Last night Channel 10 News said "Sharon Heights" and I knew exactily where they were talking about.

So whether they are Sharon Heights residents or Clintonville residents or really  both everything turned out allright...because they turned out to tell COTA, "NO!"

Sharon Heights a Clintonville Community

Clintonville area... Zillow refers to it as Sharon Heights

Creeping Clintonville Border - blame Columbus real estate agents Wikipedia does...

Columbus made Lustron homes pictured home is in Sharon Heights... not for sale

*Unfortunatley the old Sharon Heights Community Association site  has bad pop ups... it has a future meeting schedule which has 2002 meetings on it.  That is why there is no link to it here.  You can find it using Google.  If you find something currrent let me know...

Clintonville area... Zillow refers to it as Sharon Heights

Sharon Heights homes for sale - Zillow on Google

The Clintonville area... Zillow refers to it as Sharon Heights!  Or at least some of the Clintonville area is Sharon Heights according to Zillow.  The northern part of the corridor between Clintonville and the City of Worthington.  Zillow has maps showing the area referred to as Sharon Heights.

Sharon Heights according to Zillow

Could you live in "Sharon Heights" and not even know it?

Zillow's Sharon Heights seems to run from the southern border of Worthington south to Morse Rd (and Rathbone Rd, west of High St.)  Western border?  The Olentangy River?  Eastern border???  I71?  The rail road tracks?

The REAL  Sharon Heights

There really, really is a north Columbus neighborhood that is Sharon Heights.  The yellow line in this snippet of a map is High Street. The houses represent homes that were on the market and described as Sharon Heights in the Columbus Board of REALTORS MLS at some point.

Sharon Heights

The legal descriptions of some properties on E. Kanawha Ave., Charleston Ave., and Rush Ave are Sharon Heights.  I'm not sure if there are homes facing sections of Morningand Foster Streets between Kanawha and Charleston...   If there are homes on Morning and Foster between Kanawha and Charleston they could be the real Sharon Heights as well.

Zillow's Sharon Heights

The sign at the south end of Worthington as you enter Columbus welcomes you to Clintonville.  Perhaps Zillow's neighborhood naming convention will catch on and someday a sign at the Worthington border will say:

"Welcome to Sharon Heights"

The neighborhoods in the City of Columbus that Zillow refers to as Sharon Heights look like they include:

  • Chaseland
  • Delawanda Park
  • Sharon Heights

I'd bet there are others in there too...

Meadowlark is???

There is a subdivision called "Wood Something-or-other..." or maybe it is Forest.... east end of Stanton...  toward Indianola... late 1960's possibly into the 1970's houses.  Forest Rd., Woodglen, if I only had a magnifying glass I could read my Zillow map snippet above...

The Indian Something or Other neighborhood built in the late 1980s that backs to the deaf school.

The Tremont Gardens subdivision is not in the City of Columbus...  Tremont Gardens is in Sharon Township... or most of the homes in Tremont Gardens  are still in the unincorporated area.  Tremont Gardens is in the neighborhood referred to as "Sharon Heights" by Zillow.

The City of Columbus'  Clintonville Area Commission's Sharon Heights

Tremont Gardens is not on Maps for the Clintonville Area Commission, because the Clintonville Area Commission is City of Columbus...

There is an old website (with nasty pop-ups)  for the Clintonville Area Commission's "Sharon Heights" District.  That district does not include Delawanda Park.  The Delawanda Park subdvision is lumped in with Old Beechwold in City of Columbus Clintonville Area Commission Districts.

Sharon Heights Clintonville Area Commission

So if you are driving south on High St. if you believe Zillow when you see the "Welcome to Clintonville sign" as you leave Worthington, first you drive through Sharon Heights, then Beechwold, then Clintonville.
