Powell Ohio - Halloween

Powell Ohio old church which is now a businessPowell Ohio - Halloween 2009

Powell is one of the Central Ohio communities that has 'Trick or Treat' or 'Beggars Night' tonight.

I had it wrong on my Central Ohio Trick or Treat  post I wrote  that Powell was Trick or Treating on Thursday night with Dublin, Worthington, Columbus, etc.  It all started with confusion about when Trick or Treat was in Lewis Center...

Central Ohio Trick or Treat 2009 and more

Tonight is Trick or Treat for ... well here is the Kids Linked list...

Powell Ohio - Halloween 2009

I believe Trick or Treat in Lewis Center, Orange Township and Powell is this evening, Halloweeen!!!  Along with the City of Delaware,  Westerville,  Sunbury and Galena... but look at the official Kids Linked guide. It has links to many of the municipal sites.

Pictured the old church in Powell which is now a businss, Espresso Yourself Muisc Cafe . The photo has been ghostified and one ghost added just for fun.

Powell Ohio October 2009

IOOF building 2007 ghosted up for Halloween

Powell Ohio

Look at the building on the Powell History page...

It is 5. S. Liberty Roadm Powell Ohio 43065.

The building on the southwest corner of Liberty Road and Powell Roads?

Have you ever noticed IOOF on the top?

Independent Order of Odd Fellows?

International Order of Odd Felllows?

I found both "Independent" and "International" as descriptions of what the I in  IOOF stands for on the internet.  A fraternal organization?

Look at the photo on the " Historic" page of the City of Powell website (link above.)  You really can see the letters in the photo from long ago.  There were lots of people, in the historic photo too.

I don't believe there are any Odd Fellows in Central Ohio now... I believe Springfield Ohio has a live chapter....

The building today. Maca Cafe.   Tapas anyone?

5 S. Liberty Road Columbus Ohio 43065

The photo here is the building in 2007...  well the original photo was taken in 2007, the photo was "ghosted up" for October 2009....

At the top do you see the four sections...  when you drive by next time look up there... maybe it would be better if someone else was driving... or get out of your car and walk around Powell and look at the top of that historic building.

I O O F  - Odd Fellows....

Odd who is that fellow out front?

Powell Ohio says of Powell today:

"We embrace our humble roots and take pride in maintaining a quaint, homespun downtown that is alive and thriving with excitement and activity. We have preserved the ambiance of a historic village lined with beautiful sidewalks, which are perfectly suited for leisurely strolls to distinctive shops and casual restaurants. We paired that small-town atmosphere with all the modern-day conveniences and amenities of a prosperous city that offers upscale dining, specialty shops and services, and family-friendly special events."

Powell Ohio 43065

Powell Ohio 43065

The ZIP in ZIP  code stands for Zone Improvement Plan.  A ZIP code is a route not an area.  ZIP codes are subject to change.  The 43065 ZIP code is the green shape in the center postage stamp used to illustrate this 43065....  the green in the top left corner and the green in the  bottom right corner are separate ZIP codes.

The shape of the Powell Ohio 43065 ZIP code is shown in the postage stamp here. The bright green shape in the center is the mail route with the ZIP code 43065.

The City of Powell is at the center of the ZIP code but parts of Liberty and Orange Townships are in the 43065 ZIP code as well.  A bit of northern Franklin County is in the ZIP code, I believe all of the homes in the 43065 ZIP code in Franklin County are in the City of Columbus. Theoretically there could be some in unincorporated areas in Franklin Couties' Sharon Township in the 43065 ZIP code.  The Shawnee Hills corporation is in the 43065 ZIP code.

While the majority of the homes in the 43065 ZIP code today are in the Olentangy Local School District there are also homes in the Dublin and Worthington school districts,    The school district boundaries were in place long before most of this area was annexed and developed.

Progress in Powell

Powell NE corner of 4 corners

Anyone who has ever crossed southern Delaware County on Powell Rd. can attest to the going being slow at times.

Traffic There's often lots of traffic and there are some tough intersections as you travel from the Polaris area to the Sawmill Parkway area (or beyond) or vice versa.

Driving through Friday I could not help but notice the excavation on the north east corner of the "4 Corners" in Powell, the intersection of Liberty Rd. and Powell Rd.

Someday there could  be a turn lane on that corner.  Powell acquired a 10' x 60' plot of land that could someday ease the traffic going through "downtown Powell."  There are not funds or plans to immediately put in turn lanes according to the article in  This Week News.

Demolition of an old building

The 117 year old building on the NE corner of that intersection was deemed to not be worth saving according to This Week News Powell (Olentangy) which said:

"The zoning commission in June gave unanimous approval to the project after it was deemed renovation of the former building would be difficult and not cost-effective.

The commission determined the building no longer served an economical use and "costs to move and renovate it are not economically feasible, given the additional costs associated with the renovation, as well as the need for increased rents to Randy's Barber Shoprecover those costs."

Use of older homes in Powell

A lot of the older homes in the center of Powell are now antique stores, shops and offices. There's a cupcake bakery, some restaurants and a couple of barber shops complete with the barber shop poles.  Randy's Barber Shop pictured to the right has a white picket fenced yard. There's a pretty old church which now serves food and music in Powell.  There's a classic old brick school on Liberty Street which is now an office building.

One of my favorite buildings in Powell is the building on the southwest corner of the "4 Corners."  I usually forget what the I.O.O.F. on the very top of the facade means... International Order of Odd Fellows?

New commercial buildings in Powell

There are modern commmercial buildings just completed south east of Powell's  "4 Corners" ready to be leased for office and retail. The block of new construction on the east side of S. Libery Rd. is pictured to the left.   These modern sturctures  are designed to fit into the historic look of Powell.

Residential Powell

There is very little "antique" housing left in Powell, the majority of the old homes are now businesses.  Most residential property in Powell is newer or new.  Search for Powell Homes
