Which Ohioan to send to Washington DC?

Which statue of a historic Ohioan should be sent to Washington to represent the state in the National Statuary Hall Collection?

Paul Brown from Massillon

Thomas Edison from Milan

Bob Hope from Cleveland

Dean Martin from Steubenville

Annie Oakley from from Greenville

Jesse Owens from Cleveland

The Wright Brothers from Dayton

Currently one of Ohio's two statues is William Allen a congressman and former Ohio Governor (?)

I read an article about it in the Columbus Dispatch.  I'd never heard of Allen before...  or why Allen is losing his spot. Other states have switched statues.  Each state has 2 statues.  President James Garfield is Ohio's other statue.

From the Cleveland.com blog:

"Whatever happened to the effort to replace Ohio's statue of William Allen in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall with someone else?"

Cleveland.com goes on to say:

"History hasn't been kind to former Ohio Gov. William Allen of Chillicothe. Political stands that he took in the 1800s -- backing slavery and criticizing Abraham Lincoln -- didn't exactly wear well with time.

Two years ago, a group of state legislators in Columbus decided that Allen's marble likeness should no longer represent Ohio in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall Collection, where each state contributes two sculptures of native sons and daughters."

The poll was first published yesterday on ColumbusBestBlog.com Jessie Owens from Cleveland is in the lead....  others I put on the poll based on the AP article in the Columbus Dispatch....who each have one vote each?  Annie Oakley, The Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison.

The committee selecting the statues has already been to visit Edison's birthplace.

Someone voted for General Willam Tecumseh Sherman from Lancaster Ohio on the "other button" poll on ColumbusBestBlog.com General Sherman of the Civil War?

An old, old NY Times article - November 3, 1885 dateline "Columbus" about William Allen's statue being added to the group.  That article referred to William Allen as a former Governor of the Ohio.

Or should Allen remain?  The Cleveland.com post says:

"Allen isn't the only figure in the collection who took political stances that weren't vindicated by history.

Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee are there, too, along with anti-evolution crusader William Jennings Bryan."

This is a Re-blog of a post from Svetlana Stolyarova.

I could not resist this car made in Ohio (Hudson Ohio, N.E. Ohio)

Via Svetlana Stolyarova,Local-n-Global Realty, Broker (Local-n-Global Realty):

Do you know how many units the best selling car in America sold last year? More than 457,000!

Do you know that this is an American-made car? Made in Hudson, Ohio!

Do you know that it's the greenest car in the world? Zero emission, fuel free, 100 % kid powered!

Any guess?

If you want to see the answer and spend a good quality time with your family, please go to the Western Reserve Historical Society's Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland .

Little Tikes Cozy Coupe(R)

It will house one of the first Cozy Coupes® to come off the production line in 1979 as well as 30th Anniversary edition Cozy Coupe®.

Consumers and their parents obviously love this car.

What I love about it is:

No fancy engineered bankruptcies, no bailout money involved in production of these cars. Way to go!

Weather is all relative

This is a couple of years old but Columbus Ohio was tied with Tulsa Oklahoma and Oklahoma City for the 9th most dangerous city as far as natural disasters back in 2006.

Best Ohio film... celebrities decide

Well maybe not so much celebrities as professionals in the film and music industries.  A panel of judges that includes actor / director Chad Lowe is judging the 10 music video  finalists in the DiscoverOhioFilm Challenge...

The YouTube site for the Ohio Film Music Video Challenge  now links to the ten finalists only.

Guitar in downtown Cleveland

One music video from Akron...

One music video from Dayton...

One music video from Twinsburg...

Three music videos from Cincinnati...

Four music videos from Columbus...

I thought Twinsburg was a Cleveland suburb... Wikipedia says it is in Summit County and is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Twinsburg is halfway between Cleveland and Akron, according to Wikipedia.  I lived in Akron in the 80's.

The heart of Rock and Roll is still Cleveland....

Huey Lewis said so. Do you notice that there are no Cleveland music videos among the finalists? Nothing... Nada.  Zilch...  that's why I looked up where Twinsburg was.  Even though the film makers said "Twinsburg"  I was going to say that Twinsburg was a Cleveland suburb.

Not one Cleveland music video made the cut.

What's up with that?

Not all of the Ohio music videos are/were rock and roll though...

The winners of the challenge will be announced at the House of Blues in Cleveland on March 31, 2009 at 5:00 P.M. the event is FREE.

Columbus location, location, location

Vote Ohio

Ohio with a star for ColumbusVote for the best music video  - YouTube    Vote for your favorite Ohio music video by March 18, 2009.

The 23 videos that were submitted are displayed on YouTube.   The rules for the challenge for the Ohio film makers included.

"Each video must include one of the following criteria:

  • A location identified by an Ohio historical marker
  • A sign that displays the word Ohio in a positive manner
  • Apparel containing team logos that are Ohio based (Cleveland CAVS, Cincinnati Bengals, Columbus Crew, etc.)
  • Items featuring college and university logos. (Akron University, Bowling Green State University, Marietta College, Wright State University, Youngstown State University, etc.) "

Although OSU is strangely missing from the list there in the last bullet.. I did see OSU logos in a couple of he videos I've had a chance to watch...

Location, Location, Location

It is neat to see the videos showing locations in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton and especially Columbus.   I have not watched all of the videos yet.   One of my favorites is Route 43 near Kent Ohio, very abstract.

I hated a couple of the films...  A Dayton film... an Akron film... (I've lived in both markets.)  It will be fun to see how the different films come up in the voting and the judging by an expert panel.  The competition made me dig up my YouTube password... I probably have not signed in, in years.

Ohio Film Music Video Challenge  on the Discover Ohio Film website

Vote by March 18th... then there is a panel of judges who know about music and video who will weigh in on the videos.

Edit March 20, 2009  - the link at the top of this post now only goes to the 10 videos that made it through the public rating.  These 10 videos are now being judged by professioals in the music and film industry.

Happy Groundhog Day 2009!

Happy Groundhog Day!

Happy Groundhogs Day from Columbus Ohio

Yes it's that time again.  February 2, 2009 Happy Groundhog Day.

Buckeye Chuck in Marion  Ohio should be up soon to let US know whether we get six more weeks of winter or an early spring in Central Ohio.

Ohio History Central (part of the Ohio Historical Society) says of Buckeye Chuck

"From late September until early April, Buckeye Chuck spends his time hibernating. On February 2, against his will, Chuck emerges from his sleep to predict the weather. In 1979, the Ohio legislature made Buckeye Chuck Ohio's official groundhog."

While the most well known groundhog is Punxsatawny Phil in PA; groundhogs are local. Who is the ground hog for your part of the country? What did your groundhog predict for 2009?

The Apple of My Eye on OhioApples.com

Granny Smith I am not a big apple eater... I don't have anything against apples but the adage... 'An apple a day will keep the doctor away' has never really swayed me. It may be lazyness.. you may think "how hard is it to eat an apple?" but I prefer applesauce or I love apple cider this time of year.

One of my favorite spinach salads has Granny Smith Apples in it... I am kind of fond of a more tart apples.  Eating a Granny Smith can be truly tart sometimes.  There is something about autumn though that makes even a lazy apple eater like me want to bite into a crisp apple...

The apple of my eye the one I really love... is the McIntosh (that is the Granny Smith,  pictured there of course, the apple of my eye once removed.) It seems that finding McIntosh apples has a narrow window each year.

OhioApples.com use chart  shows all about the different kind of apples we have in Ohio, the uses for each apple etc.  The site shows the orchards you can visit by county, etc and lots more about Ohio grown apples. It says the McInstosh is excellent eating.  I agree...

The OhioApples.com site gives us this advice "Enjoy the Peel Whenever possible, don't peel that apple. Two-thirds of the fiber, and many of the antioxidants, are found in apple's peel."

The closest Orchard for me seems to be... Buckingham Orchards at 8803 Cheshire Road in Sunbury, Ohio 43074 (Just north of all the Galena golf courses.)   I think that would be closer for me than the one that is listed in Franklin County... wait the one place listed as Franklin County is south east of Chilicothe?  Google says it can not find 2054 Orpheus Road Thurman, OH 45685.   It found Thurman.  That's not Franklin County.  hmmm

My dog eats apples way more apples than me. Apple trees in "his yard." He loves Golden Delicious and Red Delicious...(peel, core and all) which show up as excellent eating as well on the OhioApples.com site.  Not sure which of the two varieties he prefers.

I live and work in the Worthington area, far north side of Columbus. And maybe I'll just run by Krogers and buy a bag of McIntosh apples...

Ohio Fall Color Updates

Oak TreeDid you know we have over 100 trees in Ohio... 100 varieties... or species.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Fall Color Report

The first color report of 2008 is up.  We in Central Ohio are predicted to be peak color in mid October.  It says of most of the nearby State Parks "changing."  I just noticed that it was not "green" walking and driving around Central Ohio within the last couple of days.  There are tinges of color.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources website says now:

"Poison ivy, Virginia creeper and buckeye trees are showing the most color this week, said Casey Munchel, Fall Color expert with ODNR. The poison ivy and Virginia creeper vines are coming on strong with reds and the buckeye trees are turning yellow"

We went for a short walk in the woods at Sharon Woods Metro Park on September 14, 2008.  It was windy but not as bad as it would get a couple of hours later (the remnants of Hurricane Ike came through Central Ohio that day.)  When nuts would fall out of the trees (and they were, lots) and hit you they would hurt like a #@!*.  As we were retreating from the woods I saw some red vines on a tree...  did not stop to take a photo.  I am pretty sure it was poison ivy.

2007 Slideshow of Highbanks Metro Park in Southern Delaware County.

The photo is an oak tree in Highbanks Metro Park in 2007.  The slideshow is Highbanks Metro Park in 2007, probably a week or so after Central Ohio color was considered peak.  The mighty oak was still very green.

I hope to get some pretty fall pictures in 2008.
