Trick-or-Treat 2011

Best 'witches this Halloween

Trick -or -Treat 2011 or Beggars Night 2011 is on Halloween.   In "Beggars Night date moves again" in the Columbus Dispatch back in 2009, Debbie Gebolys looked into the future and told us what was going to happen in Central Ohio in 2011.

"So trick-or-treat is Oct. 31 as long as it's a weekday. If Halloween falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, go out on the Thursday before Halloween.

That puts Beggars Night on Oct. 29 this year, Oct. 28 next year and on Oct. 31 in 2011."

For many years Beggars Night (or Beggar's Night?, the night belongs to beggars? ) or "Tick-or-Treat" was not on Halloween in many Columbus area communities.    MORPC changed all that back in 2005.  I believe the quote above is the rule of thumb for determining when Trick-or Treat will occur.  Not all communities follow MORPC's advice about when to hold Trick-or-Treat.  With Halloweek falling on a Monday this year, everyone will be Trick-or-Treating at the same night.   Won't they?

The Wikipedia listing for "Beggars Night" mentioned Ohio

"Beggars Night, or more properly Beggars' Night, is a regional term for the Halloween-related activity that is referred to in most parts of the United States as "Trick or Treat". Specifically, the term is broadly but not exclusively used in Ohio, and in many parts of Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and western New York. " is a quote from Wikipedia. The entry is dated October 2, 2010 and could obviously change...   I broke links to all the Wikipedia articles for the states and for Halloween and Trick or Treat.

Haunted Ohio lots of Columbus places

An old house in New Albany? New house doctored photo

Haunted Ohio lots of Columbus places but no Worthington places on the list?

The Shadowlands  Ohio list of haunted places has lots of haunted places in Central Ohio on the list but nothing in Worthington?

Worthington embraces "ghosts stories"  see links below!

The Shadowlands site says the Nationwide Arena is haunted,  built on the Ohio State Pen site.

James Thurbers house was haunted of course... because it was near the insane asylum and a poor deranged soul stopped by when Thurber was a young man? Trying to remember if the poor deranged soul was dead or alive? I think dead.  I don't think Thurber House in downtown Columbus even made the listed of Haunted Ohio Places on the Shadowlands site.

Granville Ohio has ghosts of course... but that is way out in Licking County.

Haunted Ohio lots of Columbus places

Where is Walnut Knolls?  Where is St. Pius X school?  Where is "the Air and Space Museum" in Columbus?

Camp Chase? Fort Hayes High School Kelton House?  Walhalla Rd or Wallhalla Ravine?   Of course... those make sense to me!

Children's Hospital, Columbus State Community College, Ohio State University's Mirror Lake are all haunted according to the list.

Haunted Ohio lots of ghosts in greater Columbus

Central Ohio suburbs.. I see Dublin in the list...the haunted golf course, Leatherlips.   I see Gahanna, who knew Gahanna - Jefferson High School gym would be haunted by someone dribbling a basketball in the dark?  A pizza hut in Hilliard?  Or maybe it is Pizza Hut in Gahanna and an Arby's in Hilliard?  Haunted fast food places amuse me for some reason.

It amazes me that there is no Worthington or no Westerville on the Shadowlands list of haunted Ohio places.  Not that I know of real ghosts in either of those cities, I just think of older houses spawning ghost stories.

The Shadowlands Ohio Haunted Places site warns against visiting the sites they have listed.  Not because of the ghost but because they are secured, private, or patroled.  They are safer to visit online.

I was showing a HUD home in northeast Ohio to a client and she said as old as it was it had to be haunted. I did not think it was even that old.  It may have been from the 1920's?

Is the photo above some old drafty, "mansiony", haunted house in Columbus?  Nope.  That house is in the Village of New Albany... that is a doctored up photo of a home in Ackerly Park in New Albany...built in 2010. Ackerly Park was the  site of the 2010 Columbus BIA Parade of Homes.  Ackerly Park is a beautiful neighborhood, walkable to shops, restaurants, etc. in the village.  Ackerly Park is adjacent to a picturesque cemetery, should make Halloween fun for those who embrace fall spookiness.

The beautiful home pictured  built by New England Homes has the "Amityville Horror" house windows up in the attic there...  that may have been what inspired me to ghost the photo up a bit here.

Beggars' Night in Central Ohio, it's back...

Cemetary Lane sign

"Beggars Night, or more properly Beggars' Night, is a regional term for the Halloween-related activity that is referred to in most parts of the United States as "Trick or Treat". Specifically, the term is broadly but not exclusively used in Ohio, and in many parts of Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and western New York. " is a quote from Wikipedia. The entry is dated October 2, 2010 and could obviously change...   I broke links to all the Wikipedia articles for the states and for Halloween and Trick or Treat.

Wikipedia:  "Beggars Night"

The term is broadly used in Ohio?  I grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee Wisconsin and we did Beggars' Night there too, traditionally the night before Halloween.... Beggars' Night is usually the night before Halloween.*  It is the night for "Trick or Treating."  Other traditions have Devils Night the day before Halloween.  Or Mischief Night...

I was looking for an old Columbus Dispatch article about an older Halloween party which was the reason that Columbus did "Beggars' Night" before Halloween when I found the Wikipedia article about Beggars Night.

The 2005 Columbus Dispatch had an article written by Debbie Gebolys titled  "Holiday, Halloween in sync this year"  and was subtitled "Beggars Night will end in much of central Ohio"

Beggars' Night... it's back!  Central Ohio 'Trick or Treat' 2010*

The 2005 Columbus Dispatch article said:

"Beggars Night, which could fall as many as four days before Halloween, was started in Columbus at least 90 years ago, originally because a Downtown community party was held on Oct. 31. But the party got too rowdy, according to newspaper accounts, and Columbus police halted it in 1954."

So Beggars Night is an old tradition, from the late 1800's. We are no longer in sync with Halloween in Central Ohio.  MORPC suggested Thursday as the day for "Trick or Treat" or "Beggar's Night" based on safety.

Lists of "Trick or Treat"  days and times are on Channel 4 and Channel 10's sites as well as links to HighBall Halloween in the Short North.  The Shamrock Club in Columbus has a Halloween celebration...  There are a lot of haunted houses in Central Ohio...  ExperienceColumbus.com is always a great place to find things to do.
