Delawanda Park the neighbors....

High St. and Leland Ave.Delawanda Park is a Clintonville community.  Delawanda Park the neighborhood is west of High Street, south of Graceland, north of Old Beechwold, and east of a City of Columbus park called both Kenney Park and Delawanda Park. The park is along the Olentangy River.

Who are your neighbors in Delawanda Park:

Deer

Great Blue Heron

Bullfrog

I wondered if this white thing I saw on Girard Rd. was a salt lick...  Actually the white thing is in the strip of trees between the road at the back of Graceland Shopping Center and Girard Rd.  I resisted an impulse to lick it to see.... my other thought about what it looked like?  Oh never mind. salt lick

Delawanda Park - Tom Arbour slept here

Delawanda Park - Tom Arbour slept here... the Central Ohio naturalist slept in Delawanda Park the neighborhood NOT Delawanda Park the City of Columbus park.

He call's the park "Kenney Park."

Tom Arbour who writes The Ohio Nature Blog rented the house at 301 Girard Rd. Columbus Ohio 43214 (the house  is for sale now NOT for rent) during his Olentangy Days...

If you read Tom Arbour's blog a few years ago and he was hanging out along the Olentangy River close to home, he was at Kenney Park (also known as Delawanda Park.)

In June 2010 Arbour had a series of Olentangy Week posts  on his blog... while he was out in Yellowstone Park he featured posts about his old stomping grounds...  Kenney Park in Columbus Ohio also known as Delawanda Park.  Visit The Ohio Nature Blog's Olentangy Week series to see some great local nature photos.   The Ohio Nature Blog says:

"Olentangy Week - This week I'll be presenting images from my most recent trip to my old stomping grounds, the Olentangy River at Kenney Park while I'm away at Yellowstone National Park."

A Large Freshwater Mussel

Great Blue Heron

Bullfrog

Walk out THIS front door and three four doors down the street you are in a very natural city park, on the river.

The seller bought the home at 301 Girard Rd. in Delawanda Park while in graduate school....  this house is all about location, location, location.  Walk Score of 72, "very walkable" to stores, restaurants, the bus and the park.

Hmmm... wondering if we would increase the value of the house by placing a "Tom Arbour slept here"  plaque near the front door.

Delawanda Park neighborhood the Best of All Worlds

Delawanda Park neighborhood  is the Best of All Worlds

Delawanda Park neighborhood tree on Girard Rd. Using an address that is almost in the park named Delawanda Park the neighborhood named Delawanda Park has an urban walk score of 72. Scores will vary by address.  Closer to High St. should have a higher walk score.

Bike Score?  It has to be easy to get to Clintonville, campus, Worthington even downtown Columbus from this neighborhood just northwest of the intersection of Morse Rd. and High St.

Bus Access... there is a Park and Ride right there at Leland Ave.  You don't even have to park if you live in the neighborhood.

Shopping at Graceland ShoppingBob's Bar High St. Columbus - The Cultural Hub of the Midwest Center  and other nearby "strip malls" for lack of a better description.  Bars and restaurants... A Bob Evans, a Qdoba, an Applebees, Pita Hut, a couple of blocks from Bob's Bar, The Cultural Hub of the MidWest...

Some  may walk to businesses in Clintonville or Worthington too.  Farmers markets, events etc

The Delawanda Park neighborhood is close to nature... go out the  front door and walk a few doors  down and you are in Delawanda Park, the city park is also known as Kenney Park... why does the Columbus Park get two names?

This post was brought to you by  301 Girard Rd. Columbus OH 43214  a home in the Delawanda Park neighborhood which is currently on the market. The link will tell you the status of the property in the future.

the Delawanda Park neighborhood

Delawanda sign The Delawanda Park neighborhood is in north Columbus near the Delawnda Park and Ride on High St. The Delawanda Park neighborhood is near Delawanda Park, a city of Columbus Park on the Olentangy River... the park named Delawanda Park  is also known as Kenney Park.

Where is Delawanda Park, the neighborhood?  South of Graceland and north of Old Beechwold.  Back in the 1920s and 1930's this area had a Worthington mailing address, it was out in the country... well in Sharon Township.  Did neighborhoods like Delawanda Park, Old Beechwold, Tremont Gardens have Worthington mailing adresses into the 1950s?  or 1960s?

Streets in the Delawanda Park neighborhood include Rathbone, Leland, Girard and .... Milton. Milton is the Delawanda Park neighborhood street I forget.  There is a section of Milton Ave. north from Rathbone Rd. write up to Graceland.  And is there a house on Delawanda Park?  One house?

Not from around these parts?  If Morse Rd. crossed High St, it would be where Rathbone Rd. is.   The Delawanda Park neighborhood north of Ratbone Rd. and the Old Beechwold neighborhood south of Rathbone Rd.   Both Old  Beechwold and the Delawanda Park neighborhood are in the  Clintonville Commission's District 6

If you've heard talk of the Bethel Road connector over the years, either the Delawanda Park neighborhood  or Graceland probably would have been where the connector would have gone through. Will there ever be a connector?  I would have thought 20 years ago that there would be a road connecting "Clintonville" to the northwest side of Columbus.  I don't think there ever will be now.  I will post something about the  Bethel Road connector someday.

Columbus City Parks with aliases - Delawanda Park

Columbus City Parks with aliases Delawanda Park may be shown on maps but Delawanda is an alias...

Google calls it Delawanda Park...

but Delawanda Park is AKA Kenney Park.

"Also known as"  as a kid I read the book 'Helter Skelter' about the Manson Family murders ...  perhaps I skipped a paragraph or two...  I believe it was the pictures of the Manson family members... they had "AKA" names.  I read it as "Ahka" throughout the books.  I think I knew it meant they used other names.  It may  have been my first crime book because "Also known as" never crossed my mind.  I think I was done reading before my older, smarter sister  told me AKA meant "also known as."

'Duh!"

Delawanda Park the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks site calls it  Kenney Park.... Delawanda or Kenney Park is in north Columbus, just south of Worthington, west of Graceland Shopping Center. The park runs along the Olentangy River.

The City of Columbus site says of Kenney Park:

"Also known as Delawanda Park."   Delawanda Park is the alias!

When Columbus nature blogger  Tom Arbour writes about his old stomping grounds in north Columbus he writes about Kenney Park.  I was recently wondering where the border was between Kenney Park and Delawanda Park and somehow became aware Kenney Park is AKA Delawanda Park.

"Ah Ha!"

Tom Arbour wrote Return to Kenney Park earlier this year.  Earlier in June while he was out west in Yellowstone Park, his Ohio Nature blog ran reruns of old posts during Olentangy Week ...

On Ohio Nature Blog Tom Arbour  wrote:

"Olentangy Week- This week I'll be presenting images from my most recent trip to my old stomping grounds, the Olentangy River at Kenney Park while I'm away at Yellowstone National Park.  "

Arbour's images of life on the Olentany River include

Odocoileus virginianus  AKA White-tailed Deer

Ardea herodias  AKA Great Blue Heron

Rana catesbeiana  AKA Bullfrog

Someplace on his blog, perhaps during Olentangy Week, Arbour said Kenney Park is on both sides of the Olentangy River.

Other Columbus parks with an alias?   Schiller Park in German Village. It was City Park.  It became Schiller Park, during WWI the name was changed to Washington Park because of anti German sentiments.

I have to wonder why the City of Columbus Park sometimes known as Delawanda Park has two names...

Are there other Columbus Parks with aliases?
