Well maybe not around Columbus, so much as in Columbus... do other cities in Central Ohio provide info on crime statistics?
Does Trulia use CrimeReports.com or another source for their information? I wrote How safe is the neighborhood years ago. It is a good way of looking at City of Columbus neighborhoods but they did not have Worthington, Westerville, Powell, Orange Township, Dublin back then.
Yesterday I was on a neighborhood site for a City of Westerville neighborhood and there was a statement about residents getting a password so they could be aware of neighborhood crime.
Quoting the un-named neighborhood's site about the information about crime's in the neighborhood:
These updates will be provided in a password-protected area of this website in the future to protect our property values. If you need a password, please click here now.
Trulia says of their site:
"Trulia's new interactive Crime Map allows you to explore, compare and comment on crimes across America - right down to the time of day, specific intersection and type of crime committed. Neighborhood crime rates are important information for home buyers, so share our Crime Map with your clients to help them get a better sense of the neighborhood and make smarter choices about where to live!"
The headline of the email from Trulia may have been more accurate. It says:
"Check out Trulia's new crime map for Columbus"
"for Columbus"
sounds more accurate. If you look at areas where the City of Columbus and the City of Worthington snake around one another, there will be crimes reported in the City of Columbus neighborhoods but no crime at all in the City of Worthington. Same for Dublin? Westerville (it was in the one Westerville neighborhood I looked at right away...) no crime in the neighborhood for buyers to see anyway because THAT could hurt property values.
When you see 0 Crimes for a neighborhood online check further? You may not be getting the whole story.
