Bonobos

This is a Re-Blog of post from janeAnne a real estate broker in Ashville North Carolina, Asheville's "GREEN "Property Consultants- LAND & Fine Homes.

If you believe this quote there are bound to be a lot of special people in Columbus Ohio... "If you know what a bonobo is, or can tell a bonobo apart from a chimpanzee,  then you are one of a few very special people."  that is from the Friends of Bonobos site janeAnne has in the post.

If you've been to the Columbus Zoo and paid attention to the Bonobos you know what a Bonobo is.  In the Columbus Zoo's conservation information about this endangered species they talk about the Lola Ya Bonobo in the Congo.

Via Asheville's "GREEN "Property Consultants- LAND & Fine Homes :

"...Bonobos do NOT kill each other. The females are in charge of the group and they seem to keep everyone's temper under control ..... It doesn't matter how old you are, or if you're male or female - ..."

UPDATE: THIS VIDEO will take you to the news on how Bonobos write, start fires and play Pac-Man... the video on Bonobos is sure to make you smile  ...so if you have a few moments, give yourself a treat...

and start thinking....maybe it is time for  creating a land legacy?

This morning I got an email that stopped me in my tracks  . It was from someone I hold in very high regard, Sara Gruen    Sara is the best-selling author of  Water for Elephants ..I imagine many of you have read it...

We met her during the course of a real estate transaction which happily landed Sara and her husband Bob and three incredible boys just down the road from us here in Asheville.

...As I read  the email, I recalled  a conversation I'd had with Sara about  face-to-face research she had done for her upcoming novel. It was with the Bonobos .  She told me how she had quickly developed a love for the Bonobo. Knowing how intelligent and family-oriented they are, Sara had taken along  a photo of  her three boys to show one of the mothers... when she told me what happened as a result, I felt tears of compassion well up in my eyes...OK..you might think I am just an old softie (which I will admit to) but

I bet that if YOU take a minute or two to visit http://www.friendsofbonobos.org you'll see why...

NOW...back to Sara's SOS...She wrote, " If any of you have blogs or email lists and can pass this along, I'd be  eternally grateful. The Lola Ya Bonobo in the Congo is the only sanctuary in the world for bonobos, the most critically endangered great ape in the world. The Lola Ya takes in orphaned babies (usually victims  of the bush meat trade), raises them, and reintroduces them into the  jungle when they are ready. Their population of 64 to 66 has been devastated by a human flu over the last couple of weeks that has carried  off 6 babies and infected at least ten others.

I am heartsick. If you've been to my Web site www.saragruen.com   the baby shown holding my book on my flash page died last week. If you can help....--I and the bonobo babies personally thank you. I've donated as much as I can. I know the economy is in the tank, and if you can't donate financially...PLEASE help spread the word ..... If you can help, I thank you a million times. I mean it. THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart. "

GO HERE TO HELP OUT  and please let me know what you think...

Bonobos write, start fires and play Pac-Man...time for a little 1031 investing?

THIS video on Bonobos is sure to make you smile

It's a Boy!

BodhiThe Columbus Zoo announced the birth of a bouncing bundle of joy today, a baby elephant.

Born at about 2:35 PM today after a 655 day gestation period to Phoebe, a 21 year old Asian elephant.  The daddy elephant (sire ) is Coco.  Phoebe and Coco are the parents of Bodhi, the 4 year old elephant which was the first successful elephant birth at the Columbus Zoo...  Phoebe has a third child from a previous relationship.

Columbus Zoo  The news of the babies birth is for now right on the front page.

You can follow the Zoo on Twitter and Facebook too.  I heard via Twitter this afternoon.  The zoo tweets as @ColumbusZoo

The zoo's press release had lots of information about the endangerd species and the zoo's conservation efforts.

The baby elephant will not be on display for awhile.

The photo is Bodhi (the big brother elephant) in 2007. Still itty bitty as elephants go.

Columbus Zoo is Top Zoo in the US

Happy Birthday Colo

Columbus "is cool" for kids

Columbus Zoo is Top Zoo in the US

The Columbus Zoo tops the Top Ten Zoos in the USA according to USA Travel Guide.

Hooray!

Here's some photos from a visit to the Zoo a year or so ago.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium website says

"Treat your cabin fever with a trip the Zoo. Now through March 1, 2009, Zoo ADMISSION IS HALF PRICE, so there's no excuse for staying home."

First Name Basis

In my slideshow I know the baby elephants name, Bodi yet I can't say for sure what the horned animal is or whether the spotted cat is a cheetah or a leopard. Time for another trip to the zoo.

If you go there, the address is 4850 W Powell Rd. Columbus, Ohio 43201

Happy Birthday Colo

Wishing you a Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday 52nd birthday to Colo at the Columbus Zoo.  Colo, named for Columbus Ohio was the first western lowland gorilla born in captivity. Colo was born on December 22, 1956.  I think Colo is the oldest western lowland gorilla in captivity now too.

This Day in History Link for December 22 has Colo as a babe, wearing baby clothes!

There is a big birthday party  at the Columbus Zoo today to celebrate, sponsored by Dunkin Donuts.  It starts promptly at 11 AM. Don't you wish it was a warmer day.  If you are a "December baby"  like Colo you can get into the zoo for free today to celebrate with Colo (9-5 today.)

The birthday ecard is from Real Living, a real estate brokerage.  I work for Real Living HER.
