Columbus in Top 10 Manliest Cities in US

Columbus is the Seventh Manliest City in the country according to an article in the Columbus Dispatch.

Cincinnati is number four... hmmmm wonder why, they don't have the Arnold Classic.  The Arnold Classis is in Columbus this weekend, downtown in the Arena Disctrict.

Rounding out the top 10 is Toledo.  Dayton and Cleveland are in the top 20.

Pro-sports teams, trips to hardware stores, monster truck rallies boost a cities manliness.

The ranking is from Combos Snacks? Combos sponsored the ranking for Sperling's BestPlaces but I can't see the Manliest Cities on the Sperlings BestPlaces site.

"Manly, yes but I like it too"

I thought  when I first heard it that the honor was from Irish Spring Soap... because of their "Manly Deodorant Soap." I could not find a video with that phrase but here's an old Irish Spring commercial in Spanish. I love it. It says "A Manly Deodorant Soap" on the Irish Spring soap's packaging.

Fifty US cities were ranked according to the Columbus Dispatch

Here's a Houston Paper with the full list from the Associated Press if you need to check for another city.

Manliest City

Numero uno in the country for Manliness? Nashville. Number 50 is New York City

Columbus do you know where you live?

How do you know where you live?

Your address?

The school district you are in?

Where the auditor says the house is...  I guess you would call that the legal description....

Something else....

I know where I live based on | BuzzDash polls

It's sure easier when you meet someone locally to say I live in Worthington, rather than I live in the City of Columbus but the  Worthington School District... or I live in the City of Columbus but in the Westerville School District and my mailing address is...

You just want to give people a general idea... They just want a general idea.

Many Central Ohioans live in an area that is in the city of Columbus but in a suburban school district.  Or our mailing address is NOT Columbus.  I wrote about an area that I think of as Westerville and someone who lives there thinks of as Gahanna. I am not trying to prove I am right... he lives where he lives.

Columbus or Gahumbusville

It is not just residents of Columbus, most people I know who live in townships will say "I live in Worthington" rather than "I live in Sharon Township"  or "I live in Parry Township."

I just wonder how you define where you live.  It's a piece of cake for those of you who live in the city of Worthington which is of course in the Worthington School District and gets a Worthington address and your counterparts in other suburbs.   Take the poll and tell me how you know WHERE you live.

Thanks

Columbus Best Place to Grow Old

Columbus tops the Forbes.com list of America’s Best Places to Grow Old

Columbus Ohio

Forbes.com says “Topping the list of second-act must haves? A place with affordable housing, low cost of living and decent job prospects.”

Yes, Forbes.com is talking about Columbus.  I thought I recognized the skyline in the photo of the article written by Maurna Desmond. Different photo than the one I am using here, but the same skyline.

Columbus Italian Festival

St. John the Baptist Italian Catholic ChurchOnly one more day left.  The Columbus Italian Festival runs through 8:00 PM today. The Columbus Italian Festival does not run through Columbus Day, Monday.

The Columbus Italian Festival is at St. John the Baptist Italian Catholic Church in Italian Village.  The church address is 720 Hamlet St, Columbus, Ohio.

We went late afternoon Saturday,  great food, great music, great people watching.  The music is not all traditional Italian music or big band music.  We listened to Yumbambé  a band that does “Afro-Cuban Jazz and Salsa” as well as traditional big band stuff like  “When the moon hit’s your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore…”

Pizza! Pizza! Pizza!

There's lots of other good Italian food too.

The Columbus Italian Parade is 2:00 today and the best local high school band (in the competition)  will be determined.

Experience Columbus Days runs through Monday, Columbus Day.   Read more about Experience Columbus Days and the Columbus Italian Festival  Columbus Day - No Whine Zone

I live and work primarily on the far northside of Columbus but Italian Village is a great place to visit.

Columbus Profile

At least for now I have the spot as sponsor for the city of Columbus on Localism.com I have mixed feelings about that. I am disappointed that with only two city of Columbus neighborhoods, Clintonville and Polaris, I got the City of Columbus for free. For at least a month the sponsorship of the city of Columbus is mine for sponsoring the most city of Columbus communities. Sad.

Sad.... also since I wrote this all but unless I repost it to my DiscoverColumbusOH.com it will be gone once someone with money and big ambitions notices they can sponsor three Columbus neighborhoods and get the City of Columbus sponsorship on Localism.com for free. Then what I wrote will be gone, gone, all gone... Nope it is here.

Without further adieu here is a profile of Columbus Ohio...

In 2008 Columbus was The Forbes.com Top 10 Up-And-Coming Tech Cities" List "No. 1: Columbus, Ohio." The Forbes.com article focused on Battele.

Columbus Ohio

Columbus OhioColumbus Ohio is the big city that no one expects. Columbus is the 15th largest city in the United States. Columbus is the largest city in Ohio and the state capital.

Columbus is unique for a city of it's size in that it is still growing, geographically and population wise.

Columbus is in Central Ohio at the convergence of the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers.  Downtown Columbus sits on the east side of the River.

Interesting, historic urban residential neighborhoods in Columbus include German Village, Victorian Village, Italian Village, Olde Towne East and Merion Village.

There are condos and lofts in downtown Columbus for true urban dwelling, many newly built and others in reclaimed industrial spaces.

The Short North, the Brewery District and the Arena District are among Columbus most entertaining neighborhoods.  The Shorth North is recognized nationally for it's art galleries.

Some parts of the City of Columbus are very suburban in feel.  As the city of Columbus grew it annexed property in many suburban Central Ohio school districts.  City of Columbus neighborhoods are occasionally still bordered by farm fields.

The Ohio State University is just one of many schools in Columbus including Columbus State University, Franklin University, Capital Law School, Columbus College of Art and Design and Ohio Dominican University.

The Ohio State University is located in Columbus in an urban area north of downtown.  The city embraces the OSU sports teams and institutions including the marching band known as "The Best Damn Band in the Land." Columbus is one big college town in the support of  The Buckeyes.

Columbus has professional sports teams, AAA baseball, The Columbus Clippers, a major league soccer team The Columbus Crew and an NHL hockey team, The Columbus Blue Jackets.

Major employers include State and Federal government, The Ohio State University,  Limited Brands, and Nationwide Insurance.

Historically Columbus  was known as "The Buggy City" because of the 12 buggy works  located in the city. Other nicknames include "The Arch City" and "The Discovery City." In recent years replicas of the arches that lit the city long ago were placed in the Short North.  "Cap City is used to describe the capital of the state but recently "The Cap" between the Short North and downtown has given this name new meaning.  The Cap are stores and  estaurants built on a cap over a highway, 670.

Columbus has a symphony orchestra, a ballet company, Balletmet and Opera Columbus.  Columbus museums include The Art Museum , The Wexner Center,  The Ohio State Historical Museum and the Ohio Historical Village.  A replica of Christopher Columbus ship the Santa Maria is a museum downtown on the Scioto River.  The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) is a city treasure.

Columbus Metro Parks features fourteen natural parks with more than 22,500 acres of land and water in seven Central Ohio counties for people to  enjoy. City of Columbus Parks include the beautiful Park of Roses at Whetstone Park on the north side in Clintonville, Franklin Park Conservatory east of downtown, Schiller Park in German Village and Goodale Park at the edge of Victorian Village among others. List of City of Columbus Parks The Columbus Recreation and Parks Division, Columbus Municipal Golf operates seven public golf courses in Columbus.  The well known Columbus Zoo is owned by the city too.  Jack Hanna brought the Columbus Zoo to America on shows like The Tonight Show and David Letterman's show.

Columbus is surrounded by a ring of suburbs, Dublin, Worthington, Grandview Heights, Upper Arlington, Hilliard, Powell, Lewis Center, Westerville, New Albany, Gahanna, Reynoldsburg, Pickerington, Whitehall, Groveport, Obetz and Grove City.  Most of the City of Columbus is in Franklin County but also it is in Delaware and Fairfield counties.  The greater Columbus area covers more Central Ohio counties including Licking, Madison, Pickaway and others.

Columbus Ohio Tops Forbes Tech City List

Columbus skyline

Ok it's an Up-And-Coming Tech Cities.... list... Silicon Valley has not been replaced by Columbus Ohio yet...  Columbus has been on lists of emerging tech cities before of course... often with cities that must be there now whereas Columbus is still "up-and-coming."

The Forbes.com :Top 10 Up-And-Coming Tech Cities" says:

"No. 1: Columbus, Ohio."

Who else is on the Forbes.com list of Up-And-Coming Tech Cities?  Santa Fe NM, Milwaukee WI, Houston TX,  Boise City, ID, Pittsburgh PA, Lake Charles, LA, , Iowa City, IA, Yuma, AZ, Palm Beach County, FL.

I wrote about Columbus topping the list of cities on ColumbusBestBlog.com Wednesday: Columbus Tops Top 10 Tech Cities

Photo of the Columbus Ohio Skyline Photo above is from Wikipedia.  "Skyline of Columbus, Ohio Photo shot by Derek Jensen (Tysto), 2006-01-23  I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby release it into the public domain. Columbus Ohio 43085 - Squid Zipper

Squidoo

Irina from Pasadena (Irina Netchaev an ActiveRain member) Twittered about Squid Zipper from the Keller Williams Family Reunion...Irina's tweet:

Seth Godin announces free svc www.mayorofyourzipcode.com. free website to build info on your town. from web

(Twitter is microblogging 140 characters...)

so I built a Squid Zipper "lens" for my ZIP code, 43085 the day Irina twittered about Squid Zipper.  I had trouble publishing my Squid Zipper lens for 43085 for some reason so it was not published until 2/19/2008. I probably forgot all about the Squid Zipper lens for a week... but I published it.  It's had one view.  Me?

Tina the Columbus blogger who writes Green Buckeye emailed me Seth Godin's 2/21/ 2008 post the other day....

Advice for real estate agents (quit now!)

to paraphrase Godin, there's a plan A and a plan b...

Plan A: You should quit selling real estate.

Plan B: this is where Squid Zipper comes in...

Gee if those are our choices maybe I need to take this Squid Zipper thing more seriously.  I went back and edited and added some info to my Squid Zipper lens.  Links to the municipalities in the ZIP code and the school district.  The rest of it did come directly from the Squid Zipper questions, prompts.  I also went and read on Wikipedia what it said Squidoo is. I have another Squidoo lens there somewhere... I started a lens looooong ago.  Squid Zipper is easier, it is more organized than just "add a lens."    Squid Zipper adds stats, a pie chart (I love stats and pie charts but I have no idea if the stats for an an area like this mean anything...) weather, restaurant ads, ebay ads and more ads...

My Squid Lens for Columbus Ohio 43085

I don't really like building content that plasters on ads for other real estate agents, brokerages... but that's the reality of web 2.0 unless it is your very own site isn't it?  On Squidoo at least I believe the income on the pages is shared, unlike all the splogs that steal the content from my (your?) blog and make money off of it while advertising your competitors with my (your) content.

Questions for the Squidoo Gurus on ActiveRain:

Anyone else done a Squid Zipper page?

Are you the mayor of your ZIP code?

Anyone who has had a lot of experience with Squidoo.. do you get a lot of spam on it? Do you have control over the lens and are you able to remove spam easily?

How do you see Squidoo different than Localism on ActiveRain?

How do you see Squidoo different than sharing the same info on your own blog?

Columbus Ohio 43085

Columbus Ohio 43085 ZIP code (Worthington Ohio.)

A great map that shows the area of the 43085 ZIP codes is on ZIP Code MAP but you will have to feed in the 43085 ZIP code n the 'Key Zip' box at the top to see the map of 43085 and the surrounding ZIP codes. The website says:

"The USPS considers zip codes to be delivery routes instead of areas. There may be differences between this depiction and actual zip code mailing address."

ZIP code means Zone Improvement Plan. A ZIP code is not an area, it is a route... a mail route.

ZIP Code 43085

If your home or work ZIP code is 43085... you live or work in:

Worthington Ohio

OR

Columbus Ohio

OR

Sharon Township

OR

Village of Riverlea

OR

Perry Township? earlier today I thought some of Perry Township was in the 43085 ZIP code... now I am not so sure... I knew of an address in Linworth which was in Perry Township which was not annexed into Worthington although all the other Perry Township addresses on the street had been...but that was 12 years ago.... Properties just a smidge northwest of this property are in Sharon Township.

Perry Township (?) Perry Township properties in the Worthington School District may be in 43235 ZIP code only now (ZIP codes change) properties are annexed.

Does it matter what ZIP code a house is in? Not that much in Central Ohio... your residence can be in the city of Columbus, in the Worthington School District and have a Westerville mailing address.....

Does it matter what municipality you live in? Very much for services.

For example Worthington Trash Pick UP vs. Columbus Trash Pick Up (a subject near and dear to my heart, I blog about Trash Pick Up on Discover Columbus all the time... ) I believe all of the 43085 ZIP code that is in the City of Columbus is NAVY. Another example would be to compare Columbus police and Worthington police service with information provided by those two municipalities.

Almost all.... but not all of the 43085 ZIP code is also in the Worthington School District... Not all of the Worthington School District is in the 43085 ZIP code.

If you want to visit the City of Columbus website say good-bye before clicking the link in the next sentence, you can seldom use your back button to return from that site to another page. Worthington Forest Condominiums is in the Columbus School District. Theoretically there could be more residences along the edge of the 43085 ZIP code that are in other school districts... Links to some other Central Ohio Public School Districts

The Franklin County Auditors site gives what school district and municipality each residence in Central Ohio is located in. Better to check that than make assumptions based on a mailing address or ZIP code.

And can ZIP codes change? You betcha!
From ZipSkinny.com for 43085:
43085 Weather... or maybe this is strictly Worthington weather...

Are you a rat?

fortune cookie Happy New Year 4706!

It's the Chinese New Year, starting today. 4706 is the year of the rat.

According to this Chinese Zodiac site if you were born in:

Feb.05,1924 to Jan.24,1925

You are a rat! What does this say about you?

"Rats are both charming and aggressive. They appear calm and well balanced on the surface, but underneath, they are restless and a little nervous. Rats are compatible, hard working, and they know how to hang on to a penny. They are never without admirers. They are very appealing. They have a bright and happy personality, and this keeps them busy socially. They love parties and other large gatherings. They like belonging to exclusive clubs and will often have a close circle of fellow conspirators. They like involvement and are very outgoing. Rats cherish friends and loved ones. For this reason, they often get entangled with others' problems and lives."

If you are not a rat according to the Chinese Zodiac what are you? What does it say that means about you? I was born in the year of the dog. On the Chinese Zodiac site find the year you were born and click on the icon to the left.
