Scioto Audubon Metro Park

Maureen McCabe Scioto Audubon Metro Park is unique because it is just a mile south of downtown Columbus. We went to see the newest Columbus Metro Park on Sunday August 30, 2009.

The Scioto Audubon Metro Park and the Grange Audubon Center is right on the Scioto river, west of the Brewery District and German Village. A point of reference for some although I am not showing it in the photos here? The Columbus Police Department Impound Lot is at 400 W. Whittier Street, or actually the facility on the Whittier Peninsula is the City's Parking Violation Bureau including the CPD's impound lot. I have some photos that show the impound lot with the sun gleaming off the cars.

Hey... I guess you get a glimpse of the impound lot in the picture of the bird feeders. To the right edge of the photo there's some cars and a fence. In front of the Columbus skyline? That's the edge of a huge impound lot! Look south from high rises in the city of Columbus and you can see it too.

The Grange Audubon Center is gorgeous....and interesting. I wanted to see the green roof...

A slide show. Just a few of the photos I took on a very grey day. Mostly the photos are of the building, Grange Insurance Audubon Center. It is gorgeous. Classrooms, displays, a library, a nature store, all surrounded by observation decks overlooking the wetlands, the river, the skyline from the south.

Whittier Peninsula - Metro Park

The Whittier Peninsula just south of downtown Columbus bringing nature to downtown Columbus. Friday August 28, 2009 a new Metro Park was dedicated. Scioto Audobon Metro Park The 71 acre park on is on the Whittier Peninsula, just south of Downtown Columbus.

Here's a great slideshow geologically, historically speaking going way, way back long before the park was reclaimed, before Columbus was founded, before modern Indian history, way back when Ohio was underwater... The Whittier Peninsula. Bringing Nature Downtown .

I've been watching the progress of the park on Whittier Peninsula for a few years. I am going to go discover the new park for myself this weekend.

Columbus Metro Parks - Highbanks

Highbanks is now one of my favorite parks in Central Ohio.  Located in Delaware County Highbanks Metro Park is part of what is now called "Metro Parks" but was originally and pretty recently known as the Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park District.

The Metro Parks site says:

"Established in 1945, Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park District "Metro Parks" features 15 outstanding natural area parks and protects more than 23,500 acres of land and water in seven Central Ohio counties."

A walk in the park - Highbanks

path in Highbanks A walk in Highbanks Metro Park in Central Ohio to be exact.

Highbanks - Map   9466 Colum bus Pike , Lewis Center , Ohio 43035

I live and work closer to Highbanks Metro Park than any other Metro Park.  Highbanks was probably the first Metro Park I ever visited in Central Ohio. I remember an office party / meeting event  at Highbanks Metro Park in the early 90's.  I remember cross country skiing with a friend in 1992 or 1993 at Highbanks Metro Park. I've gone to a number of organized dog hikes (howl at the moon!) and my dog Buddy and I have gone hiking on the doggie approved hiking path at Highbanks a number of times. I had seen the river, I remembered there is a sledding hill if there is ever snow....in Central Ohio.  I guess there is always a sledding hill at Highbanks whether or not there is snow.

Last fall while at another Metro Park reading about Highbanks Metro park and what it has to offer I realized I had never seen the "highbanks."  Other than the dog park which is mostly on paths along level meadows on the north edge of the park (often within sight of Powell Rd.)I thought of Highbanks as a picnic grounds or a place to walk the dog. I had always missed the main event, the nature trails along the ravines and high rocky banks.  I don't know that I had ever even walked in the woods at Highbanks although if I had surely I would have kept walking to see the ravines, banks, streams. etc.

So finally last fall we spent a couple of afternoons hiking at Highbanks Metro Park in the woods for the firstravine at Highbanks Metro Park time.  We went back early winter... we did not visit in the dead of winte.  Maybe we will this winter. I don't have cross country skis anymore. We went back to Highbanks Metro Park in early spring when the only green was moss... the grass was not yet green. We went back in the spring and summer. We've been back when the water in the streams was very low.  We've been back when the water was higher.

The leaves will changing again soon.

Other Central Ohio Metro Parks  on the north side of Columbus include:
