Top 10 Twitter Cities

Twitter Thanks to Connie in the Omaha NE area for this post.  This is a Re-Blog of the top 10 Twitter Cities by Connie Watts.  Connie tweets as SellingOmaha

London is the number one city for Twitter... not London Ohio of course, London England.

When you hear London on TV or radio do you think London Ohio or London England?

I think England.

When you hear Dublin do you think Dublin Ohio or Dublin Ireland?

I think Ohio.

Because Dublin is bigger than London (talking Ohio here)?  Or because I live and work in the Worthington area and have probably only been in London Ohio a few times in my life? I was last in Dublin on Saturday.

I want to say Columbus is the 27th biggest Twitter city... but that does not include me... or people in Dublin, Worthington, Powell, Lewis Center, Westerville, etc. who say they live in Dublin, Worthington, Powell, Lewis Center, Westerville, etc. rather than say Columbus. Columbus is the 27th Top Twitter City in the World

Oh no... Columbus has fallen to number 29 on the list.

I am not Columbus Ohio Twitter elite but these folks are   Columbus OH Twitter Elite

Do you Twitter?  I am @MoInColumbuOH

Via Connie Watts - Omaha Homes for Sale / Offutt AFB Homes, 402-880-9027 (Prudential Ambassador Real Estate):

I found this interesting website that ranked The Top 50 Twitter Cities.  It's very cool that the majority of the top 10 are in the United States.  Interesting that Denver, Phoenix and Las Vegas were so far down on the list.  But, hey, at least they made the list, unlike Omaha, Nebraska.   Twitter - SellingOmaha

1.  London

2.  Los Angeles

3.  Chicago

4.  New York

5.  San Francisco

6.  Toronto

7.  Seattle

8.  Atlanta

9.  Boston

10. Austin

Columbus is the 27th Top Twitter City in the World

twitter In the World...

Columbus Ohio, of course.

London is number one and that is not London Ohio (outside Central Ohio London is a small town north west of Columbus.)  I think of London England first usually when I hear London.  Now Dublin is a different matter...

And the Columbus record did NOT include me... not that I tweet that much... really.

Columbus Underground has the scoop: Columbus is 27th Top Twitter City in the World

"This ranking bases information on the “Location” setting in your twitter profile, so if you’d like to see our ranking improve, make sure you have Columbus, Ohio listed as your current location."

My profile said "Columbus - Central Ohio." Before that it used to be something like "North Columbus Ohio", both on purpose.  If your Twitter profile says Powell, Worthington, Dublin, Lewis Center, Westerville, etc. or something like North Columbus Ohio, the cornfields of Central Ohio, C-Bus, Twittergrader is not counting you.  Your choice.

I have to believe part of Columbus being high in comparison to some other US cities is the old media in Columbus tweets.  The Columbus Dispatch, the  local TV stations, the radio stations...  and some of them aren't just broadcasting.  They are tweeting.   Old Media New Media(

Do you Twitter?  I Twitter as @MoinColumbusOH

OK Walker I chaged my location... for the greater good...to Columbus Ohio....

Ten Twitter Turn Offs

If you Twitter what are your Twitter Turns Offs?  These are my Ten Twitter Turn Offs.  What are yours?

Spam is probably the number one turn off anywhere on the Internet  for most of us but I get confused about how spammers spam on Twittter.

Ratio

Twitter Turn Off #1. It's a ratio thing.....

It's a ratio thing between followers vs. being followed.  The followers who are following a huge number of members are to be avoided.

You'd think... "look he / she is reading ALL those Twitter members Tweets..." Good behavior? NOT!  They are trying to drum up followers for their commercial tweets by following to get read? Using Twitter for traffic with out creating conversation.  Not that ZamboniPalin (from a little political joke on the internet about Governor Palin's kid's names) is a spammer. The spam thing on Twitter confuses me... though because I think only once have I clicked on an icky link via Twitter... because I pay attention to ratios before I follow.

Twitter Turn Off #2. The "Thank You For Following" or "Welcome Followers" ...Notes  Tweets

Thanks for following me This is probably only me... I hate the "thanks for following tweets." They probably do it to be polite. Here's one that got unfollowed because of  "You can check out my real estate blog at "http://blahblahbla.net" Gee if I wanted to  check out your real estate blog I could certainly find it....   and not all Thanks for the Follow Tweets are bad... a personal note from someone I know would never offend me.  Or even one from most strangers.   I found this DM (direct message) from a total stranger particularly conversational:

Hi Maureen. Thanks for following. How did you find me (just curious)?

Someone I follow was having an interesting conversation with him.  I clicked to see what he tweeted... and ended up following him.

I am probably on someones Twitter Turn Off list for NOT saying "Thanks for the Follow."

Here's a blanket "Thanks for the follow" if it applies...

Twitter Turn Off # 3. Broadcasting  I saw a tweet from someone in the media in Columbus when This Week News started tweeting.  He tweeted he'd unsubscribed because they just broadcast.  Not that the Dispatch, WOSU etc. aren't This Week News Tweeting broadcasting tweets to get us to their sites...

Or on a less local level The New York Times, The BBC, Reuters etc. aren't broadcasting their stories.   Some broadcast better via Twitter than others.

It may be like Sunday Morning Real Estate Math Problem's guy  and Dryer Vent Franchise Sales Fella on ActiveRain.  Some say split it up so it does not look like a block of ......

Or maybe split it up so it does not look so obvious that you are broadcasting rather than conversing with others....

IMHO There is a difference between a feed of a story or two and a big block o' broadcasting.   So far I have not unfollowed the big block of broadcasting that is This Week News but I can't say I am tempted to go visit a lot of it.

There are lots of ways to broadcast.  I know I used to use TwitterFeed on my ActiveRain posts and those from my two blogs.  I did not stop.  It broke.  It breaking may have been a good thing...

Twitter Turn Off #4. Same old Same Old...being followed by lead generators who will connect me with buyers and sellers turns lead generatorme off.  Again look at their ratio, following a lot more than are following them. Not as bad as some.  Maybe I need to get over this.  Not following this one (or most) but being folllowed by a few.

Twitter Turn Off #5  My Twitter Paranoia

Can you Twitter if you are paranoid?

Personal... months later I still have a lot of the same issues.

Turns out I could not come up with 10 Twitter Turn Offs. Mostly I like Twitter a lot.... so I had to ask for help.

I asked via Twitter:

what turns you off from following a follower on Twitter?

They answered via Twitter:

SherryAbel @MoInColumbusOH I'll block people that follow if they seem creepy too, or if they're just selling something.

SherryAbel @MoInColumbusOH What makes me not want to follow a follower. Lots of profanity is a main one for me. That and creepy avatar. Urs is funny.

thiswomanswork @MoInColumbusOH When their decision to follow me seems arbitrary (no shared interests, no shared followers, no shared touchpoints)

Thatcher @MoInColumbusOH Too much bragging. Or a completely skewed follower/following ratio; 8500 readers & only 15 friends, for example.

NBCNewsCrew @MoInColumbusOH Great question! For me it is: "always negative posts" and "political rants". Cussing and yelling turns me off too..
jkhewett @MoInColumbusOH Obvious & blantant spaming .... communicate with me / share with me ... don't spam me!

LisaSanderson @MoInColumbusOH Political discussions & updates w/very few @ replies are the main things that turn me off. And follower/followee ratio.

tcar @MoInColumbusOH Too much politis for one. A stream of chech out my blog posts is another.

robpatrob @MoInColumbusOH When they have too many people they follow (in it to connect only) & when they don't also talk about their real lives

Thanks to all. What are your Twitter Turn Offs?

Columbus Radio - It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas

Real Living ecard Christmas

It's not as early as last year... or maybe I did not notice it until today.  Sunny 95 has Christmas music this morning.

Last year it started earlier?  In a poll last year, the smattering who read or cared thought November 3 was NOT too early for Christmas music on the radio.  Or the majority of the smattering who read or cared voted that it was not too early for Christmas music.

Poll from Discover Columbus 2007Discover Columbus 2007 Christmas Music Poll

It's November 15.  That's not early, really. Thanksgiving is a couple of weeks away.  Driving by Polaris last night we wondered if Santa was there yet...

I won't even bother with a poll this year.  If November 3 wasn't too early in 2007 why would November 15 be too early in 2008.

Sunny 95 online gives you the choice of "holiday" music or their regular fare. Their site says they are "Columbus Continuous Christmas Music Station."

The image is a Real Living eCard.  I am with Real Living HER, Central Ohio's number one real estate company.

Old Media New Media

Twitter image borrowed from an @activeRich postThe media in Columbus is Twittering or some of the media is.

Outside Columbus...does the media in your market blog? TV stations?  Radio stations?  The newspapers?

Does the media in your market Twitter? Twitter is microblogging.

The media in Columbus is Twittering... just like us civilians. I am @MoinColumbusOH on Twitter.

Tim Eby is the first old media soul that I met via Twitter. Tim is with WOSU radio in Columbus.  Tim inspired a post on ActiveRain about Twitter. Can you Twitter if you are paranoid?   Having a stranger "following me" freaked me out. I knew strangers were reading my blogs... why did having a follower on Twitter who I did NOT know freak me out?  I am paranoid.  Tim is @timjeby on Twitter.

I started following oldmediajim at some point.. on Twitter @oldmediajim (love that name) is NOT local... oldmediajim runs around the world as a ???  I think oldmediajim is with ABC news.... I stand corrected - see comments... NBC... (national news) oldmediajim is Jim Long in real life according to Twitter.  His Twitter bio which tickles me is "new media soul trapped in an old media body"

I had never given "old media" or "new media" a lot of thought prior to following some of the "old media" on Twitter. Yes I have read news feeds from local news for years on the internet, when something catches my eye.

I heard on TV that Channel 4 (local NBC) was going to start Twittering so I went looking and started following some of the Channel 4 news staff including but not limited to:

Ryan  @NBCSquire
Denise @Denise_WCMH
Donna  @donna_nbc4i
Jason @Jason_WCMH
Amanda @Amanda_WCMH

A lot of the staff at Channel 4 Twitters, these are just a few that I follow.  Here's a post on Ryan Squire's (@NBCSquire on Twitter) blog about who is Twittering at their TV station new and  their Twitter handles..including the STARS on NBC 4 news in Columbus.

I just started following an intern at Channel 4 this morning.. @InternMeredith

I assumed that Channel 4 would use Twitter to feed their news stories but that is not how Channel 4 uses Twitter.

On his blog Ryan Squire in "Does Twitter Give the Competition An Advantage?"  raisesd a question about the way they (NBC 4 in Columbus Ohio) are using Twitter.

I believe I heard via Twitter that Channel 10 was now Twiittering so I started following Channel 10 (our local CBS station.)  A week or so ago some of us were Twittering about the difference in the two local channels...

Channel 10 Twitters different than Channel 4.  Channel 10 has a SpokesTwitter for the TV News. Channel 10 does not  rely totally on TwitterFeed to post their Tweets, but I believe it is all one person Tweeting. I wrote about how the two Columbus TV stations are using Twitter differently on ColumbusBestBlog:

Watching Columbus TV News Twitter  the comments on my post is where I found out who the SpokesTwitterer for Channel 10 is.  Craig Friedman is the voice of Channel 10 on Twitter.

Channel 10 is @TV10 on Twitter.

Does the old media in your market use new media?

I saw my friend Stephen in Birmingham Alabama tweeting at what looks like a local ABC station

sbwolfe @abc3340 cant yall do something about that? seems like yall would have some pull...

Does the newspaper Twitter in your market?  I have not seen the Columbus Dispatch embrace Twittering yet.  Do local radio stations Twitter?  Other than WOSU I am not sure that local radio has discovered Twitter yet.  Does the TV news Twitter in your market?  Do they take the approach of letting individuals within their organization have a voice on Twitter? Or having an individual post for the "company."

Columbus Blog City

Columbus Skyline

"Columbus?" is the headline of a blog post from a Pittsburgh blogger.

What does Columbus Ohio have in common with  New York, Los Angeles, London, Chicago, Rome, Madrid, Toronto, Houston, Washington, Atlanta, Paris, Seattle, San Diego, Austin Texas, Minneapolis, Denver, San Francisco, Portland Oregon, Dallas, Singapore, St. Louis, Jakarta, Brooklyn NY, Philadelphia, Mexico City, Montreal, Beijing, Moscow, Mumbai.

"Blog Belt status" according to the story he quotes in Business Week.

Reaction by Pittsburgh blogger Mike Madison of Pittsblog:

 "Columbus?"

The lists are the usual large metro areas and wired and wireless meccas. And Columbus, Ohio, which comes in at number 30."

Business Week's Graphic of the Blog Belt  is described:

As Net connections spread, Web 2.0 services are expanding. On a recent day, these were the top 30 cities for blog postings and comments, divided into three tiers by levels of activity.

The full Business Week article - Children of the Web

The Business Week article is very long.  I have not fully digested it yet.   It was one day.  Maybe Columbus was particularly bloggy on that day.

I am sure many in Cleveland, Cinci, Akron, Dayton, Toledo, Youngstown as well as Indianapolis, Detroit and others are saying "Columbus?"  World class blogging from Columbus?

Columbus blogs include:

Around the Oval
Bitchin’ in the Kitchen with Rosie
Boys Wear Pants Men Wear Trousers
Buckeye Banter
Buckeye Commentary
Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus Movie Guy
Columbus Retro Metro
Dave’s Beer
Dead Body Guy
Done Waiting
Everyday is Like Wednesday
Ferret Press
Googlified (no more?)
Green Buckeye
Innerart CharlieBits
It’s a Paul World
Jason Sanford
Jason’s Page
Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Pinkie Style
Restaurant Widow
the 270
Two Wheeling

and one of the oldest local sites... ColumbusUnderground  Walker Evans left a comment on one of my posts about Columbus blogs.... Columbus has lots of food and football blogs and absen from this list are political blogs and at least a half dozen real estate blogs... including ColumbusBestBlog.com.

Columbus Bloggers + WOSU + COSI = Social Media Cafe

Columbus Social Media Cafe

What could happen if traditional media and new media... joined forces in Columbus Ohio?

They've got the megaphone (s) ....

WOSU TV local public TV

WOSU Radio local public radio

Columbus Ohio's got the inquiring minds... COSI Center of Science and Industry

WOSU and COSI have already joined forces... in the Digital Media Center at COSI

Twitter was down Thursday evening but here's the feed on Twitter - Social Media Cafe

I Twitted about it when I got home...

Maureen McCabe MaureenMcCabe How I spent my Thursday evening...http://twitter.com/SocialMe... from web Icon_star_empty Icon_trash

The first meeting Columbus Social Media Cafe was mind boggling... I was one of about 20 Columbus Bloggers at a very open and in person "forum" at COSI on Thursday evening. The question was : "What can we do together that we cannot do alone to make the community better using Social Media?"

Now this may be a real estate networking first. There were two Central Ohio real estate bloggers present. Me and gorgeous Joe Peffer (even this YouTube video does not do Joe Peffer's smile justice)... Joe is an ActiveRain member. I first got to meet Joe in person at the BlogTour USA stop in Central Ohio last summer... During BlogTour USA in July 2007 two east coast real estate bloggers, Joe Ferrara and Rudy Bachraty of Sellsius Real Estate Blog traveled cross country to evangelize blogging and talk to people (real people... not just bloggers and not just real estate people) about blogging and social media.

Columbus Ohio Live on Blog Tour USA via ActiveRain - July 13, 2007

Ancient history... anyway BlogTour USA was the first time I met Joe and saw that smile. In one of the sessions at the Social Media Cafe I mentioned ActiveRain and the points and the value of the Active Rain points... What's the point of points on ActiveRain. What the incentive is to participate on ActiveRain and mentioned how much real estate people like having their face show up... So without further ado here is a first... this YouTube video features Joe's pretty face, great smile... and the wise words of Joe and other Columbus bloggers about what traditional media and new media getting together can mean to Columbus Ohio, "What can we do together that we cannot do alone to make the community better using Social Media?"

Just in case .... the link to the YouTube video of Columbus Social Media Cafe - November 15, 2007 Columbus Social Media Cafe Logo used with permission .
