Columbus Jobs Outlook the best

Help wanted signIn times like these is being “the least worst” the best a city like Columbus can hope for?  Is being “least worse” the same as the best?

Columbus “not as awful”

Columbus “least worst”

Today's Columbus Dispatch says:

Columbus, which falls just short of having 1 million workers, also has a decline of 0.8 percent, which is best in Ohio. Or maybe it’s the least worst.

In ‘Urban job-loss forecast not as awful for Columbus’ By Dan Gearino of the Columbus Dispatch,  Columbus is compared to other Ohio cities and cities across the US when it comes to projected job loss in this recession.

My original "real estate" blog was called Columbus Best Blog...  it's successor is ColumbusBestBlog.com which also wrote about the topic of Columbus being the "least worst."

Today’s Columbus Dispatch article has various projections for employment in Columbus from the mayors conference, the Chamber of Commerce, and experts.

A Columbus Dispatch article six days ago  ‘Update: Battelle to invest $200 million in area, add 200 jobs’ talked about expansion in jobs for one Central Ohio employer in three communities, Columbus, Dublin and Madison County.

It's the economy, stupid...

Columbus Ohio

Who am I calling stupid?  No one.

A sign of the times.... a comment on my Discover Columbus blog on an entry about Columbus Food & Restaurant forums  says:

Apr. 4, 2008 - RE: Columbus Restaurant Forum

Posted by Sam DeTillio
Rob DeTillio chef of Thom 's on Grandview was recently fired because the owner claimed he couldn't afford to pay him. So i would like to ask everyone who reads this to boycott going to Thom's on Grandview because the food will not be nearly as good as when my father worked there.

P.S: be aware of the seafood

I've never tried Thom's on Grandview and I would really hate to post anything about a struggling businss that would hurt the owner's and other employees any worse... I thought about not approving Sam's comment on Discover Columbus.

I feel sorry for both Rob and Sam... Rob's entire famly.  I wonder how old Sam is.

I think I will try to do lunch at Thom's one day this week... Is Sam's cryptic P.S. beware of the seafood or be aware of the seafood?  Thom Coffman one of the owners of Thom's is a respected leader in the restaurant industry.

I think the idea of boycotting a business because they had to make a cut in light of the economy would not be a good idea...

More signs of the time for the City of Columbus and another industry

Columbus lost an airline Friday April 4, 2008.

Skybus shuts down effective today... it was just announced yesterday...

Skybus    I am going to post the whole announcement here incase they take down the Skybus site.  I would think a website is a a minor expense in the scheme of things with rising fuel costs and a faltering economy but this is historic news for Columbus Ohio...

"Skybus Airlines will cease all operations effective Saturday, April 5.

Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, customers, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated. Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.

Passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights scheduled to depart on or after Saturday, April 5, 2008 should contact their credit card companies to arrange to apply for a refund. More information for customers and others will be made available on the Skybus web site (www.skybus.com) as it becomes available.

All flights for Friday, April 4 will be completed. Passengers holding reservations on flights for Friday, April 4 should check in for their flight at a Skybus kiosk at the airport instead of the Skybus website. "

The Columbus airline was not a year old.

An idea ahead of it's time?  The airline which was started with seed money from Battelle, Huntington Capital Investment Co. and Wolfe Enterprises Inc. (the Wolfe family owns the Columbus Dipatch) had seats on each flight that they sold for 10 dollars.  The airline was 10 months old.

450 Skybus employee's lost their jobs yesterday.

Skybus shuts down, cancels all flights by Marla Matzer Rose Friday, April 4, 2008 11:11 PM.

Skybus folds by Marla Matzer Rose of the Columbus Dispatch I believe it says this is 3:18 AM on the 5th.

Lots of aviation industry experts said from the very beginning that the Skybus business model was a dumb idea.

It's not just Columbus or Ohio...sad news about an old established airline in another state...

How are restaurants, businesses and industries doing in your area?

"How's the economy in your hometown?"

US map from Moody's Economy

Is the US in a recession?

"Is your state in a recession?"

According to the legend on the map in USA TODAY the red states are "In Recession"... yellow states are "At Risk" and the green states are "Expansion."

The linked map is interactive, go to USA Today and click on your state to see how your state breaks out by metropolitan area. The map for your state will tell you what communities are "In Recession", which areas are "At Risk" or those deemed "Expansion" as well. There are also white according to the map although no states are white for "Recovery." On a statewide basis in Louisiana, New Orleans gets a white dot. Looking further I found some more white dots, Bangor Maine, Biloxi Mississippi... some town in Minnesota.

Ohio

Good news for Columbus, in Ohio, Akron, Columbus and Weirton - Steubenville (I've never heard of Weirton) are green dots. Again green dots mean "Expansion."

Other Ohio cities? Only Toledo gets a red dot for "In Recession." Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Youngstown get yellow dots for "At Risk" as do many of the smaller cities in Ohio.

The USA

The USA Today article "How's the economy in your hometown?" from Barbara Hagenbaugh says:

"While business owners and workers in parts of the country for months have weathered recession-like conditions — job losses, home foreclosures and slumping consumer and business spending — others have been doing well. Some areas are likely to feel very little effect from the slowing economy.

That's mainly because a marked contraction in housing is leading the overall economy down this time. Housing had been instrumental in boosting many regions, particularly the Southwest, in recent years.

During the housing expansion, job growth in related industries flourished, and consumers tapped their growing home equity to buy everything from cars to couches.

But in many parts of the country, housing never boomed, so now there's not likely to be a corresponding bust. And a number of other elements of the economy are still doing well, helping to keep some regional economies above water."

Columbus is one of the areas where housing did not boom like other parts of the country.

According to the USA Today article California, Nevada, Arizona, Florida and Michigan account for a quarter of the US "nation's total economic output" and were already in recession at the beginning of this year. The article breaks down the economy by tourism, motor vehicle production, exports, agriculture, housing and automobile manufacturing and breaks each industry out by states. In example "Top 10 states with motor vehicle production as highest percentage of gross state product in 2006" Ohio was 4th... of course our neighbor Michigan was number one on that list and "Top 10 states with agriculture as the highest percentage of gross state product in 2006."
