Salvation Army Columbus

I rang a bell at a Salvation Army kettle in Worthington on Thursday.  The kettle at the Worthington Kroger is sponsored by Worthington Industries.

Thanks to Linda Tacosik in the Worthington Real Living HER office for organizing, scheduling and reminding us.  We worked a one hour slot, two of us ringing bells, dueling bells.  My bell kept falling out of my mittened hand.

You can text in a donation to the Salvation Army in Columbus to 90999.  Text the word -  Kettle.  I did.  It texted me  back to confirm the $5 donation.  My phone company put the donation on my next bill.  I believe it works with all of the cell phone services.

According to the Salvation Army's Columbus site "serving those in need in Central Ohio since 1885."  That's a tradition!

Speaking of charity... today is the Charity Newsies Paper Sale, a Columbus tradition.  Buy a paper, help to clothe children.

Poverty in Central Ohio

Do we have poverty in Central Ohio?  Are there people who go hungry in Columbus and the surrounding counties?

The Mid-Ohio Foodbank is the 11th largest foodbank in the United States.  Mid-Ohio Foodbank serves Central and Eastern Ohio.... requests to them for food are up 14% from a year ago.

"Mid-Ohio Foodbank is dedicated to feeding hungry people by collecting and distributing food and grocery products, advocating for hunger-relief programs, and collaborating with others who address basic human needs."

Members of the Central Ohio community volunteer time, food and money to feed the hungry people served by the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.  Local restaurants, kitchens and farmers work with the Mid-Ohio Food bank to provide food for hungry people.  Mid-Ohio Foodbank supplies 500 local pantries, soup kitchens, etc. in Central and Eastern Ohio.   Every dollar collected by Mid-Ohio Foodbank allows them to provide $8 dollars in food to local people who need it.  Many  of the hungry people in Central Ohio are children.

Mid-Ohio Foodbank is a part of Feeding America (formerly known as America's Second Harvest),  which they say is "the nation's largest non-governmental, domestic hunger relief organization."

Mid-Ohio Foodbank is raising funds to move to a larger facility in Grove City.  Mid-Ohio Foodbank has raised $10 Million of the $16 Million required to make that move.  Mid-Ohio Foodbank is presently on West Mound Street in Columbus.

Today is Blog Action Day.  This years theme is poverty. I wrote about it today... I contributed money today...  trying to find some time to contribute...
