Comparing Central Ohio Schools

Moving to Central Ohio and wondering about schools?  As real estate agents we can't tell you what schools are the best for your children but we are able to provide you resources to find the best schools for your family.

I have a list of "selected"  Central Ohio School Districts on my website.  They're  "selected" because of geography... these are the school districts in Northern Franklin County or Southern Delaware County, the areas I primarily work:

Big Walnut Local Schools, Buckeye Valley Local Schools, Columbus City Schools, Dublin City Schools, Gahanna - Jefferson City Schools, Grandview Heights City Schools, Hilliard City Schools, Olentangy Local Schools, Plain Local School District,Upper Arlington City Schools, Westerville City Schools and Worthington City Schools.

One site to use to compare Central Ohio public schools is SchoolMatters.com :

Compare Central Ohio Schools on SchoolMatters  Broken Link

School Matters was a Standard and Poors publication, it is now a service provided by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).    The School Matters site is showing 2007 results now.  You can compare schools within the same state.

Compare Central Ohio Schools with state report cards by school

The actual Ohio school report cards are on that first link as well.   To get to them go to the Data Tab and in the drop down menu choose "Report Cards iLRC"   You can look at report cards for a district and you can look at the individual school buildings.

Central Ohio Schools - President Obama's Education address

by Maureen McCabe Central Ohio Schools - current events

A + grade on a chalkboardOlentangy Schools are not

Hilliard Schools wasn't but will, or kids can.

Dublin Schools was not but will? Or kids can later if their teacher decides it fits the curriculum.   If they want to.  And  if their parents want them to.

According to an article today in the Columbus Dispatch Hilliard had announced they would not but is going to allow children to watch and those whose parents want them shielded from the message to "opt out" of watching a televised speech to school children.

A Tuesday speech to US students from the president of the United States will be televised.  Will Central Ohio Schools watch as part of their school day?  Allow children to watch?  Allow children to watch with their parent's permission? ...before all the hubub schools were sending out permission slips for children to watch.

Were the parents calling their school to let the school know their child was not permitted to watch the president address US student or was their concern that the school not allow other children in the school district to watch?

What is the president going to talk to school children about?

"The U.S. Department of Education has said the speech is to be a 15- to 20-minute message from the president about working hard and staying in school."

First the calls came from parents who did not want their children to watch the president address US school children... or did the concerned parents just not want their school district to let any children watch?

Central Ohio Schools - political science

A Wednesday Columbus Dispatch article written by Bill Bush was titled: "Angry parents get schools to shun Obama speech to students"

The subtitle  of the article is "Dublin, Hilliard, Olentangy districts decide not to show president's TV address Tuesday"

Seems other parents wanted their children to have an opportunity to watch?  So they called their schools and objected to other parents objection to their children (school district's children) watching the televised address.

Today's Columbus Dispatch article again by Bill Bush is titled: "Firestorm grows over Obama's talk to students"

Who knew "working hard and staying in school" could be so controversial?

Central Ohio Schools

What are other Central Ohio school districts going to do?  Read the Columbus Dispatch article.  All Columbus schools are viewing it?  I don't see mention of Worthington in either Columbus Dispatch article. Today's Columbus Dispatch article says:

"Many districts, including Bexley, Upper Arlington, Westerville and Reynoldsburg, are leaving it up to teachers. Groveport Madison also is showing the speech, but like most will offer an opt-out for those who don't want to watch."

Franklin County Ohio schools make the grade

Some Franklin County Ohio schools make the grade... others are still working on it.

Ohio Department of Education grade by districtCongratulations to Franklin County schools districts who got top grades for the 2008 - 2009 school year as many schools are starting the school year this week.

The grades were released yesterday.  There is so much information about Franklin County school districts on the Ohio Department of Education site it is mind boggling.

The easy thing for me is to look at the report cards.

You can look at report cards by school district or building by building within a school district.

The state does not give A,B,C, D, F and any  + or _  (plus or minus)

  • Excellent with Distinction
  • Excellent
  • Effective
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Academic Watch
  • Academic Emergency

Ohio issues report cards by district:

Ohio School Districts

Ohio issues report cards by each school building:

Ohio schools by individual school building

The Franklin County schools that got top grades....  Congratulations to Franklin County School Districts that got a grade of Excellent with Distinction this year:

  • Bexley
  • Dublin
  • Grandview Heights
  • Hilliard
  • New Albany Plain Local
  • Worthington

Did I miss any?

I made an assumption that one school district would have an Excellent with Distinction grade from the state.   The school which  I assumed would have the top grade from the state of Ohio is rated excellent.... grades  change year to year.   You know what they say about assumptions.

I really only work the north part of Franklin County so I do not work with homes in some of these districts below.

All Franklin County School Districts according to the Ohio Department of Education:

  • Bexley City
  • Canal Winchester Local
  • Columbus City
  • Dublin City
  • Gahanna
  • Grandview Heights City
  • Groveport Madison Local
  • Hamilton Local
  • Hilliard City
  • New Albany-Plain Local
  • Reynoldsburg City
  • South-Western City
  • Upper Arlington City
  • Westerville City
  • Whitehall City
  • Worthington City

Ohio Schools report cards - making the grade?

chalkboard with A+ Ohio Schools report cards come out today.

This morning Channel 10 News says:

"The Ohio Department of Education planned to release its annual school district report cards on Tuesday morning.

The report cards, scheduled to be released at 10 a.m., rank each district based on how they are performing in several areas."

As you send your kids off to school for the 2009 - 2010 school year what grade is the state giving your school district?  A number of schools in northern Franklin County, Southern Delaware County start tomorrow I believe.

Information for some Central Ohio public school districts on my website.  There is also a short list of private and parochial schools in Central Ohio there too.

Ohio Schools report cards

Each local school district will be awarded a grade by the   Ohio Department of Education.

Not A, B,C, D, F...  I did not have a chalboard that says "Continuous Improvement" or "Excellent with Distinction" or the other grades that the state gives each school district.

Central Ohio School's out for summer

"Well we got no choice school chalkboard with E = MC squared
All the girls and boys
Makin all that noise
'Cause they found new toys
Well we can't salute ya
Can't find a flag
If that don't suit ya
That's a drag

School's out for summer
School's out forever"

'scuse me ... I grew up with Alice Cooper... and someone asked me if I knew when "schools out..."

Well it kinda depends on which school district you are talking about.

A partial list of Central Ohio School District's " last day"  :

  • Big Walnut Local School District  Wednesday, June 03, 2009
  • Buckeye Valley Local School District Friday, June 05, 2009
  • Columbus City School District - Thursday, June 04, 2009 (trad schedule)
  • Dublin City School District - Thursday June 04, 2009
  • Gahanna Jefferson City School District - Wednesday,  June 10, 2009
  • Grandview Heights - Friday, June 5, 2009
  • Hilliard City School District - Friday, May 29, 2009
  • New Albany - Plain Local School District -  Friday, June 5, 2009
  • Olentangy Local School District -Tuesday,  June 2, 2009
  • Upper Arlington City School District- Thursday, June 4, 2009
  • Westerville City School District - Tuesday, June 9, 2009
  • Worthington City School District  - Thursday, June 11, 2009

Unless of course schedules have changed due to calamity days, snow, wind...

I really, really forgot a valid answer to this poll about when summer starts in Central Ohio.  I am sure for many it is when school is out.
