Buckeye Chuck!

Buckeye Chuck  the official groundhog for the state of Ohio will be predicting whether we get six more weeks of winter or have an early spring this year.

Groundhog Day decor

Buckeye Chuck is up in Marion Ohio, north of Columbus.  The News from the Marion Star about  Buckeye Chuck's appearance going into the big day, Wednesday, February 2, 2011.

If Buckeye Chuck sees his shadow we have six more weeks of winter.

If Buckeye Chuck does not see his shadow, he is predicting an early spring.

We are supposed to have freezing rain Tuesday into Wednesday...  will Buckeye Chuck even want to come out of his den?

Do you believe in Buckeye Chucks ability to forecast Ohio weather?

Columbus Ohio is Buckeye Chuck Territory

Happy Groundhogs Day 2009

Columbus Ohio - Why do we celebrate Columbus Day?

Santa Maria crows nest Why do we celebrate Columbus Day in Columbus Ohio?

This was originally posted on Discover Columbus (a different blog) back in 2006... but it's name back then was Columbus Best Blog.

Why do we celebrate Columbus Day in Columbus? Because it is Columbus Day.  Because we are the biggest and best Columbus in the US,  Wikipedia says so.  Because until the state of Ohio changes the name of the state capital to something politically correct and oh so catchy like "Indigenous Resistance" we will remain Columbus Ohio.

We are just one of many US cities named Columbus after Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer... who sailed the ocean blue back in 1492... for the Spanish.  I saw an Ohio blog that called Christopher Columbus a "genocist."  I can not find genocist in an English dictionary or a Spanish dictionary... one online dictionary says:

"The spanish word 'genocist' was not found, have you entered the accents correctly?  If you think 'genocist' should be in our dictionary please contact us, and we'll try to add it."

I probably don't have the correct accent.  I don't think of Columbus being controversial  until a few days before Columbus Day each year.Instead of Columbus Day, some people prefer to celebrate "Day of Indigenous Resistance."  In Latin America some celebrate "Day of the Race" which if I am not mistaken is a celebration of the Spanish heritage. I think I always thought it was a celebration of the indigenous races.

A New York blogger, 'Brendan's Mommy' shares young Brendan's take on why to celebrate Columubus Day  on her blog:

"We celebrate Columbus Day because a man named Christopher Columbus sailed 3 ships - to Ohio to go to the capital. And the ships are called the Nina, the Panda and Santa Maria. "

According to Wikipedia:  "Italian-Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of Italian-American heritage."

Happy Columbus Day or whatever you celebrate...

Ways to celebrate Columbus Ohio in 2009 include:

Experience Columbus Days -  through October 12*

50% off Central Ohio events like The Santa Maria, The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, COSI and more

The Columbus Italian Festival October 9, 10, 11 2009

* There is no Columbus Day Parade in Columbus Ohio on Columbus Day....  if you need a parade this weekend there is a parade on Sunday afternoon at the Columbus Italian Festival!!!!!!

There are helpful herpetological (is that a word?) hints on ColumbusBestBlog.com about the 2007 slithery visitors name.

Helpful Herpetology Hints

#1  The  snake’s photo looked like a cinnamon roll.

#2 Another hint which will help you find a snake post on ColumbusBestBlog.com :

Ooooh that was when he or she (the snake ) was posing like a cinnamon roll.

Central Ohio - Trick or Treat 2009 and more

Maureen McCabe - Trick or Treat 2009 in Central Ohio

jack-o-lanternI hate writing events posts and I was putting off going looking for Trick or Treat for Columbus, Dublin, Grandview Heights, Gahanna, Hilliard,  Lewis Center, Powell, Upper Arlingto, Westerville and Worthington.

Procrastinate long enough and you can just link to a site like Columbus Parent's Magazine's Kids Linked who has the list of Columbus area Trick or Treat times!

Kids Linked - Trick or Treat 2009  and more

Trick or Treat 2009 in Central Ohio

You really only care about the Beggars Night date for where you live don't you?  Mostly?  Most of the suburbs I really care about Dublin,  Gahanna, Hilliard, New Albany, Powell,  Upper Arlington, and  Worthington are having Beggars Night (Trick or Treat) on Thursday October 29, 2009.  City of Columbus is Thursday October 29, 2009.

Grandview Heights and Westerville have their Beggars Night (Trick or Treat ) on Saturday October 31, 2009, Halloween!

Trick or Treat 2009 - the mystery of Lewis Center

Lewis Center area? Lewis Center is not on the Kids Linked list but lots of further out areas are.  Lewis Center is not a city... EDIT Wrong I would bet Lewis Center  has Trick or Treat in the Orange Township area on Thursday October 29, 2009 like Powell, Worthington  the nearby suburbs... but Lewis Center is near Westerville which has a Saturday Beggars Night and Galena and Sunbury's Beggars Night are Saturday...

The Orange Township website shows - the Orange Township Trick or Treat is Halloween, Sunday EDIT Saturday October 31!

Trick or Treat 2009 in Central Ohio - outlying communities

I wrote "Most of the suburbs I really care about" it's not that I don't care about further out... and Columbus Kids Linked has the scoop on further out and parts of Central Ohio.

Really visit the Kid's Linked site... they have links to many of the community websites on their  local Halloween  calendar, you will want to double check for your kids...  I went to double and triple check Westerville.

The Kids Linked list also has pumpkin shows, corn mazes, haunted houses, haunted train rides...

EDIT - Channel 10 TV list of Trick or Treat 2009 - more outlying towns

Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. You can be a little bit unpredictable, but a pirate's life is far from full of certainties, so that fits in pretty well. Arr!
