Spring is Around the Corner Columbus

Spring is Around the Corner for Columbus Ohio according to Buckeye Chuck

Happy Belated Groundhog Day

Can you send belated Groundhog Day cards?

Buckeye Chuck in Marion Ohio did not see his shadow yesterday morning so we will NOT have another six week of winter in Columbus, Ohio.  Of course we really have not had much winter weather at all this year.

Punxatawny Phil did see his shadow this morning so he is predicting six weeks more of winter.   I hear Buckeye Chuck has a better record when it comes to accuracy.   According to people who keep track of this. Or can remember year to year anyway, what the rodent said and what the weather from February into mid March was like.

Columbus Ohio: Beating the Winter Blues

Columbus Ohio is not always sunny in the winter (there's an understatement.)   I was glad to see sunshine on Monday morning before the rain came.  I should have run out and grabbed some pictures but I did not.  I need a sunnier photo of Worthington for my Facebook profile.

My Facebook Timeline photo

Winter in Columbus Ohio is "Kinda" Blue

I have a new "Fresh Facts" from First Watch in my mailbox from their Sun eClub this morning.  This month (maybe the Sun eClub newsletter comes out more or less often?) is about "Beat the Winter Blues in 5 Easy Steps."

Lack of sun can make people sad.  Lack of sun can make people eat comfort food to feel better according to the First Watch newsletter.  The newsletter is written for all of the chains locations?  I believe the restaurant chain started in Florida but it is as if this e-newsletter is speaking to central Ohio.

First Watch's "Beat the Winter Blues in 5 Easy Steps" are

"

  1. Get enough sleep - they recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep and 30 hours of heart pumping exercise
  2. Eat lighter fare
  3. Eat whole grains
  4. Eat more fruits and vegtables
  5. Don't be a hermit    "

Throughout the newsletter selections for lighter fare, whole grains, fruits and vegtables on the First Watch menu are highlighted. I am sure you can read the newsletter online (link above to their website.) There is a lot more detail about what each of the 5 steps means too.

Columbus Ohio - First Watch locations

I have nThe Shops at Worthington Place ot been to the Worthington Mall First Watch location as much...I believe it was the first, First Watch in central Ohio a long time ago. I remember  long waits on Sunday mornings even when the mall was headed downhill. I guess we've gone there a couple of times in the last year on a Sunday, early and it was not a long wait.  Now with the mall being revitalized.... and is now called  'The Shops at Worthington Place.'  Weekday should be OK at First Watch in Worthington even though the mall is getting more and more tenants.  The First Watch at The Shops at Worthington place is on the east side of the mall, you can use the east entrance.  In nice weather there is outside dining.  That is only going to get nicer as the mall is remodeled inside and out.

We sometimes go to the Polaris area First Watch location at the Polaris Neighborhood Center (east of  I 71) 2103 Polaris Parkway, Columbus, Ohio 43240.  There is usually a wait but not as long as what I remember at the Worthington First Watch.

First Watch restaurants are every where in central Ohio.  The Hilliard First Watch is at Mill Run Plaza.   There are First Watch locations in Upper Arlington, Dublin, German Village, New Albany and now  a Reynoldsburg / Pickerington location.  The First Watch website (link above) has address on where each location is.

Columbus Ohio is in central Ohio.

Mill Run: The Grass is Greener

Mill Run, Hilliard Ohio 43026 the grass is greener

Mill Run sign

Irrigation systems are not all that common in central Ohio. They certainly are uncommon in homes under $200,000.

  • 496 properties single family homes in the Columbus Board of REALTORS mls are listed as having an irrigation system.
  • 54 homes priced under $250,000 of 7278 properties .7%
  • 32 homes priced under $200,000 of 6401 properties .5%
  • 12 homes priced under $150,000 of 4903 properties .24%

Irrigation systems the 496 of  9,461 single family properties on the mls (multiple listing service) at 9:42 AM EST on December 19, 2011 total.  That is .5%

The 9461 homes were all the homes in the Columbus Board of Realtors mls, all counties.  An irrigation system is just NOT that common. A green irrigation system is really rare.

The Mill Run website describes why the grass is greener in Mill Run:

Mill Run the big pond

"A master irrigation system with about thirty (30) miles of pipe and 1,700 sprinkler heads covers all street rights-of-way and pond easements. The system is designed to also irrigate all private properties within the 350 acre complex. The master irrigation system draws water from the central pond which totally eliminates the use of potable water and significantly limits the use of natural surface or subsurface water resources for the irrigation of turf and plant materials on the total project site. The irrigation system uses harvested or captured rainwater for watering all landscaped areas."

There is more information about the Mill Run ampitheater, the ponds, etc. on the Mill Run website.

The Mill Run development was built inside 270 in the mid 80s.  Part of the Mill Run mixed use development is in the City of Columbus and part is in the City of Hilliard.  I believe the entire Mill Run development is in the Hilliard City School District.  It is always important though to check the county records of any property you are interested in  to verify the school district.

The green green grass of home - living in Mill Run

Mill Run has office buildings, retail, a huge church, restaurants, retail and residential properties including apartments (I do not work with rental properties), condominiums and single family residences.

Seduction in Clintonville: Graceland History

Seduction in Clintonville or a bit  of Graceland history  -   In my weekly installment about how Graceland Shopping Center got it's name... actually it has been weeks.  I drove by the NEW business on High Street in the south end of Clintonville and it made me think about Graceland and how The Other Paper tells the story.  Seduction....

Here is how The Other Paper tells the story of Graceland on Columbus northside, below.... The seduction today is at Target, health club, shops and restaurants in Graceland Shopping Center in north Columbus.  Clintonville?   Clintonville or perhaps the neighborhood is  Sharon Heights, part of the Clintonville area! Clintonville does not have fixed borders, where Clintonville starts and ends is subjective.

Where Graceland is today was farmland in Sharon Township in the 30s, 40s and 1950s.....

 Graceland sign

The land was developed into a shopping center in the 1950s.

Without further ado.... The Other Paper says:

"In the 1930s, the Graceland Shopping Center-where Clintonville-ites now work out, bank and are seduced by the latest Target fashions-once was a horse farm belonging to Patrick Murnam, a gambling man whose mistress, Grace Backenstoe, operated a famous brothel Downtown, according to local historians. Police shut down the operation and the building eventually was sold to the Lazarus family, but that didn't stop ol' Grace from working at home, according to lore.

"In 1952, investors purchased (the farm) and Graceland Shoppers' Mart was developed by Don Casto, who had played there as a youth," said Shirley Hyatt, author of the book Clintonville and Beechwold (Images of America).

The May 2011 article by Lyndsey Teter of The Other Paper was about a new business moving to Clintonville.  A business owned by Larry Flynt.  Did you know the infamous Cincinnatian owned a business on Gay Street in downtown Columbus? That was long, long ago.   I heard that story at City Hop this fall....

The story of Graceland

How Graceland got it's name

Graceland's name... would you buy this story?

The photo of the sign on the land that was a horse farm but would soon be a place for people in Clintonville and Worthington to shop is Don O'Brien's taken for the Worthington News, a newspaper in 1953.   O'Brien shared the photo with a Creative Commons license.
