Calamity Days in Columbus

A + on chalkboardI am not sure when Ohio Schools started having "calamity days" rather than snow days.

Most Central Ohio schools are out of school today because of snow and ice.  They were out of school yesterday because of snow and ice.

Most Central Ohio Schools are at or over the limit for "calamity days" for the school year now.

I went looking for some official Ohio info about how many school days Ohio School districts have... what the rules are... and found a document (PDF)  for The Ohio General Assmbly that defined calamity days.

I found this "MEMBERS ONLY" brief  Googling for "calamity days"  so even if it is inside info here's the story about what constitutes a "calamity day" for Ohio Schools.

• Hazardous weather conditions;
• Disease epidemic;
• Inoperability of school buses or equipment necessary to the school’s operation;
• Damage to a school building; or
• Temporary utility failure rendering the building unfit for school use."

The reason many Central Ohio schools are out of "calamity days" now is the September windstorm.  Many schools were closed a number of days because of the storm, caused by hurricane Ike.

Some Central Ohio Private School Info

The Westerville School District get's high marks from me for having this posted right on their website:

District News
Westerville City Schools
January 29, 2009

All Westerville City Schools are CLOSED Thursday, January 29, 2009 due to snow.

Of course you can always watch TV and read the school disctrict closing on the bottom of the screen for your school or listen to the radio....
