Calamity Days in Columbus

A + on chalkboardI am not sure when Ohio Schools started having "calamity days" rather than snow days.

Most Central Ohio schools are out of school today because of snow and ice.  They were out of school yesterday because of snow and ice.

Most Central Ohio Schools are at or over the limit for "calamity days" for the school year now.

I went looking for some official Ohio info about how many school days Ohio School districts have... what the rules are... and found a document (PDF)  for The Ohio General Assmbly that defined calamity days.

"AN INFORMATIONAL BRIEF PREPARED FOR MEMBERS OF THE OHIO GENERAL ASSEMBLY BY THE LEGISLATIVE SERVICE COMMISSION STAFF"

I found this "MEMBERS ONLY" brief  Googling for "calamity days"  so even if it is inside info here's the story about what constitutes a "calamity day" for Ohio Schools.

"

• Hazardous weather conditions;
• Disease epidemic;
• Inoperability of school buses or equipment necessary to the school’s operation;
• Damage to a school building; or
• Temporary utility failure rendering the building unfit for school use."

The reason many Central Ohio schools are out of "calamity days" now is the September windstorm.  Many schools were closed a number of days because of the storm, caused by hurricane Ike.

The Westerville School District get's high marks from me for having this posted right on their website:

How's the Neighborhood? How good are the schools?

eCard from Real Living Back to School

This is a reblog of content from Diane Lynch a real estate agent in Illinois.  Diane is in the Chicago area but what she is saying about schools and neighborhood safety is true for Central Ohio too.

There's lots of information available about schools and neighborhoods in Central Ohio.

Via Diane Lynch (Realty Executives Premiere):

To the buyers out there......

Realtors cannot tell you "how the neighborhood is" or "how good are the schools" in particular areas. That is against the Fair Housing Laws. We can offer you websites to research these things. We can tell you to search on the internet. We can suggest you knock on doors in the neighborhood to talk to the neighbors. But we cannot give our opinions on how "safe" the area is. We encourage you to research the area before you buy. It's important to buy in a neighborhood you feel comfortable in.

It's not that we don't know the area. It's not that we are holding back. It's just that we can't help you there or we are violating the law.

Are you smarter than a Powell 6th Grader?

You think you are so smart...   Or maybe you don't.

When it comes to science do you think you are as smart as a Powell Ohio 6th grader?

Her father issued the challenge via Twitter:

Are you smarter than a 6th grader?

Are you smarter than a sixth grade science student? - take the test!

The father is @8101harris on Twitter  Dan On It is his blog. His blog is about "marketing.branding.social media.technology.entertainment.startups"

Powell Ohio is in the Olentangy Local School Discrict  in Delaware County Ohio. I am going on the semi scientific assumption  this is a science fair in a school in the Olentangy School District... from the father's Twitter profile but you know what happens when you assume...  Maybe the daughter is in private school.

Hope they will share the results with us. You have to say your age, education level, whether you are in the science field for your employment or not.

Science has never really  been my strong suit.... I wanted to be a scientist when I was really, really young.  I was inspired by a new uncle with a Phd. and I thought beakers, test tubes and bunsen burners looked fun.  My older sister is a chemist, my two brothers are engineers....  they got all the science smarts not me.

I just remembered I did compete in a science fair in 2nd or 3rd grade.  It was traumatic

Are you smarter than a sixth grade science student? - take the test!

Clintonville "If you build it..."

Cornfield From 'Field of Dreams.'  "If you build it they will come."  Not a baseball diamond in a cornfield.

If you build a turn lane on N. Broadway in Clintonville more traffic will use North Broadway rather than side streets, according to at least one Clintonville resident who lives on North Broadway.

Clintonville does not have cornfields.  An established area on the cities north side, Clintonville is primarily residential.

I had to stay up and watch the news last night to see what neighbors in Clintonville were arguing about.  10TV.com - Clintonville Neighbors Argue Over Busy Intersection     The solution for some Clintonville residants? A turn lane that would allow south turns on High Street from N. Broadway. Traffic from I-71 exiting via the North Broadway exit can not turn south on N. High St.  The two proposals both put  turn lane on North Broadway.

Who opposes a turn lane on North Broadway? People  who live on North Broadway.

"The left-hand turn lane, we believe, is just like Kevin Costner said in Field of Dreams: 'If you build it, they will come', " an opponent of the proposed lane told 10TV News."

The Clintonville Commission will be the decider.

Columbus Jobs Outlook the best

Help wanted signIn times like these is being “the least worst” the best a city like Columbus can hope for?  Is being “least worse” the same as the best?

Columbus “not as awful”

Columbus “least worst”

Today's Columbus Dispatch says:

Columbus, which falls just short of having 1 million workers, also has a decline of 0.8 percent, which is best in Ohio. Or maybe it’s the least worst.

In ‘Urban job-loss forecast not as awful for Columbus’ By Dan Gearino of the Columbus Dispatch,  Columbus is compared to other Ohio cities and cities across the US when it comes to projected job loss in this recession.

My original "real estate" blog was called Columbus Best Blog...  it's successor is ColumbusBestBlog.com which also wrote about the topic of Columbus being the "least worst."

Today’s Columbus Dispatch article has various projections for employment in Columbus from the mayors conference, the Chamber of Commerce, and experts.

A Columbus Dispatch article six days ago  ‘Update: Battelle to invest $200 million in area, add 200 jobs’ talked about expansion in jobs for one Central Ohio employer in three communities, Columbus, Dublin and Madison County.

Moving with children and decluttering you home can be stressful!

This is a re-blog of a post from Sheri Moritz of North Hills , North Carolina.

It's a post that would be hard for me to write first hand in part because although I have moved a number of times myself, I have no children.

I do remember going to Pittsburgh years ago to help my sister who had a toddler  on moving day.  Moving day was long and eventful.  The moving truck was loading, she was going to the closing and hitting the road on a holiday weekend to drive to another state with a toddler and a couple of cats in her compact car.  My sister's husband was already on the job, she had power of attorney to close for him on the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania home.

I was a real estate agent at the time and I went to the closing to see how it was different than ours and to babysit the toddler during the closing. That is probably the only closing where I have got down under the closing table for any reason.

It's been so long... but I will never forget her vet gave her "sedation"  for the cats for the long drive.  She followed the instructions to administer the sedation hours before they were scheduled to leave.   While the house was wide open for the movers one of the cats walked out but was very easy to catch as he was "stoned."

But moving with pets.... is another story... Here's advice for parent's from Sheri.

Via Sheri Moritz (Real Living Realty Experts):

Ok, Who decided that moving with children was a good idea?  As a Realtor myself, I see families pack up their family and belongings everyday and move them to a new house.  It looks like an easy task from the outside.  We, the agents, just get the paperwork signed and the family packs their belongings...Right?

Well, when I was in high school and college I was a waitress and thought everyone should do it once just to see what it is like to better appreciate what the servers are going through.  Maybe part of the real estate exam should be to see how well us Realtors handles a move of our own.  This might help agents better understand what our clients go through on a daily basis.

I recently moved my 1 and 10 year old to a new house.  I think that those who move a long distance have the advantage of limited space.  When you are moving local and can make several trips people seem to throw or give less away.  In my move I learned several things that I hope will help you whether you are moving with children or not.

1.  Prioritize what you really want and need to move with you! Now is a great time to look in those boxes that have been in the attic for several years.  Do you really want or need these things.  Sometimes it seems easier to just pack that box into the truck and move it to your next home.  I found that if you post anything for free on Craigslist (www.Raleigh.Craigslist.org) that someone will come and pick it up.  This way you don't have to worry about an additional trip to the dump or goodwill.  Just set it outside, post an ad and someone will pick it up.

2.  Help Children Sort through their things ONCE!  That is right...ONCE.  This is my third move with my 10 year old and found the best thing to do is first have a discussion with her about the importance of giving to other children that don't have as much as she does.  Then I let her go through each of her toys and decide what is important to her and what she really uses and what would be a blessing to a child needing toys.  Of course our pile of give always is small, but I then go through them while she is not around and narrow the keeper pile to what I know she actually uses.  I allow her to look at the pile of stuff I don't think she needs anymore and have her explain why it is important.  With most of the toys she agrees that it would be better for another child and she really doesn't play with it.  But like most adults, children find it hard to let go of things even if they are not using it.

3.  Ask the Older Children to Help!  I found that children enjoy helping pack.  Although it may take longer sometimes it makes them feel better and more secure with the move if they have seen their belongings go into the boxes and then where the boxes go.  Most children fear a move and losing their belongings.  This allows them to feel more comfortable that the new house will have all of their things from the old house.  Most teenagers should be responsible for packing and unpacking their own room.  They too will feel more comfortable knowing where their belongings are and if you are a parent of one will understand..."you didn't touch their stuff".

4.  Get a Babysitter for Children Too Young to Carry Boxes!  You might have to pay a friend or a neighborhood teenager to help with this task, but is worth every penny in time.  Moving is very stressful without children running around and needing attention and food.  It is also a potentially dangerous place for them to be.  You will be able to cut your move time considerably if you don't have to manage the small children.  If you can't find a sitter because they are all helping with the move you should plan to have things for the children to do such as coloring.  Moving day might be a good time to rent a couple of good kid's movies, get out some snacks and pack the tv and dvd player last!

5. Resort items at Your New Home!  Take a second look at the things you moved with you when you are unpacking.  If you have no place for it, don't plan to use it, but still moved it... This again is a great time for Craigslist.  If it is valuable, sell it.  You are not under the same time pressure.  If you have a garage, don't bring items into the new house you don't plan to use.  This will encourage you to get the garage cleaned out and to donate or sell those things you are not going to use.

The closing to a blog like this can only be... Good luck!  Moving itself is hard.  But, moving with children allows us to show them our maturity to give to others, to prioritize what is important and needed, and how the unconditional love we have for them gives us patience to help with their stress from moving and the separation anxiety from the clothes and toys they have outgrown.J

Miami's Chilly January Weather

Miami Florida...

I have to re-blog this with our weather in the single digits in Columbus Ohio right now.

I have tried to get Maggie Dokic to guest blog on my ColumbusBestBlog.com to no avail.  I have offered to Maggie  and other real estate bloggers in markets that Central Ohioans may relocate to when the Ohio weather get's to be too much for them.

Maggie is from New York so she know's cold.

It's is going to be below 0° tonight?  High is supposed to be 7° tomorrow... bundle up. Olentangy and Westerville schools are closed tomorrow.

Heat wave for the weekend in Central Ohio ... the 20's.

Via Palmetto Bay | Redland Real Estate | Maggie Dokic (EWM Realtors):

Having grown up in New York, I find it funny that when the weather drops to the 50's in Miami, people start bundling up!

On my way to drop the kids off at school yesterday I looked over to the driver beside me and chuckled when I saw that he had a knit hat and gloves on.  It was only 57 degrees for Pete's sake!  I can't imagine what he'd wear in Alaska.

I admit, the main reason I don't live in New York anymore is the cold winters.  I am a chicken when it comes to the cold weather.  My body has betrayed me and acclimated quite nicely to the lovely weather here in Miami.  The balmy climate in South Florida suits me to a T but even I was airing my toes yesterday!

A Creative Attempt to Diminish Pollutants

Here's a perspective that you will not find from me.

#1 I am just not that green.  Sorry.

#2 I have never been to Dundee Scotland

#3 Caitlin Murray is a writer for Real Living I am just re-blogging Caitlin's ActiveRain content with her permission.

Interesting.  Creative.

Via Caitlin Murray (Real Living):

Transforming car pollutants back to clean air through another car? Seems a bit counter intuitive, but in Dundee, Scotland, artists and scientists have recently constructed a creative attempt to convert toxic car emissions back into oxygen and nitrates.

A new public artwork called Catalyst is to be unveiled in Dundee fairly soon. Catalyst is a sculpture resembling a car draped in a sheet. Made from concrete that according to a recent article by BBC, "contains catalytic titanium dioxide which reacts with light and triggers nitric oxides, carbon monoxide and sulphur monoxide to break apart," Catalyst converts car toxins to oxygen as well as nitrates that are beneficial to soil.

This is an exciting addition to Dundee's Greenmarket Car Park and Sensation science center. I had the opportunity to visit Dundee about seven years ago, and though the city is making the transition from major manufacturing sector to a Scottish hub for software development and biotechnology, it's still fairly industrialized. As a matter of fact, a great deal of Dundee's growth took place during the Industrial Revolution when the city earned a reputation for its jute refining and whaling industry.

Concrete similar to that found in Dundee's Catalyst ‘eco-sculpture' has been used across the globe to help diminish polluted air in urbanized settings. However, this is the first instance where the concrete has been used in the UK. Hopefully this step toward mitigating the pollution problem on the north shore of the Firth of Tay will continue to push an interest in environmental sustainability throughout Scotland.

What a day..... icy and cold and Active Rain

What is Infrared Scanning?

Rick Harrington a Central Ohio home inspector is an  Infrared Residential Specialist.

What a great way to show temperature a dog-o-meter.  I don't even remember how cold it was on the 10th (Saturday)  when Rick posted this but I can tell you it is cold today in Columbus!

Brrrrrrrr.....

Via Rick Harrington Specialist--Infrared Residential (Patch Independent Home Inspections, LLC):

Here is Columbus, Ohio it's been raining and freezing most of the day and most of my exterior activities have been postponed.

I will venture out to the Blue Jackets game tonight.

As I try to catch up on book work and communications and what not on the computer I keep bringing up the Active Rain website... Yes I'm either addicted or like the distraction.

I find myself reading a lot of post on subjects that don't pertain to home inspections and some that do.

Who needs television..... the dog and I are relaxing today.

Here is a picture of Brutus with Infrared scan..... he must be doing ok... his nose is cold.
